“Are Running Backs Worth More Than Minimum Wage??” (DaveTalksSports Podcast – Ep. #29)

I still don’t understand what the Mets are doing.

The Yankees are still fine.

While you’re getting tackled by 300 pound men, Zeke’s going to be chillin’ on the beach.

U.S. Soccer is taking the dumbest stance against the U.S. Women’s National Team..EVER..it’s hard to argue against facts.

Congrats Bo Bichette!!

“The MLB All-Star Game SUCKS!!” (DaveTalksSports Podcast – Ep. #14)

Watching MLB’s All-Star Game should be used as a torture technique.

NBA Coaches need to learn how to throw their ‘Challenge Flags’.

Reggie Bullock has allegedly eaten his former self.

And the USWNT take over NYC for the day!!

Paul George leaves Russell Westbrook all by himself.

The USWNT deserves more $$ than the USMNT.

I’m So Confused!!!!

I’m sorry, can you please repeat that??

No, I heard you, I just don’t understand….

Sports have never been complicated. Most things are easy to understand. But today, I am legitimately confused:

Win A Championship And….Quit?!

barry trotz

Barry Trotz, head coach of the Washington Capitals, won the Stanley Cup on June 7th. And resigned as head coach of the Washington Capitals on June 18th.

ron burgundy

No Ron Burgundy, that doesn’t make sense.

Trotz spent four years as the head coach of the Capitals. During his tenure, the Capitals had the best record in the NHL (205-89-34). And Monday, just 11 days after bringing the Capitals their 1st Stanley Cup in franchise history, Trotz said this:

“After careful consideration and consultation with my family, I am officially announcing my resignation as the head coach of the Washington Capitals.”

It appears this was a dispute over what else; money. Trotz made $1.5 million last season, less than 25% of the highest paid coaches in the NHL. Trotz probably feels disrespected, as he feels he deserves an extension and a sizable raise. While there was an extension clause written into his contract, if they won the Stanley Cup, the raise allegedly wasn’t walking ‘hand-in-hand’ with the extension.

Which means Barry Trotz will be the next head coach of the New York Islanders — hopefully.

Win THREE Championships….And QUIT?!?!

Zinedine-Zidane-goodbye-to-Real-Madrid-came-as-surprise-1000x600

Zinedine Zidane shocked the world when he left Real Madrid just five days after winning his 3rd consecutive Champions League championship. Zidane is creating a pattern here:

“I want to end with Real Madrid when everything is going well,” he concluded. “I did it as a player, and now again as a coach. This the right moment to end things well.”

Great players often go out on a high note. Barry Sanders retired immediately following a nearly 1,500 yard rushing season (1,491 yards). Jim Brown led the NFL in rushing in his final season (1,544 yards). But this isn’t often a move for great coaches. Zidane, just 45 years old, seemed to have a bright coaching future ahead of him. Instead, he’ll be….actually, I have absolutely no idea what he’ll be doing.

The Mets Scored A Run?!?!

surprise

The New York Mets applied to have their logo permanently placed next to the word anemic in the dictionary. They may have to rescind their application.

After scoring just 21 runs in their previous 13 games (1-12 record), the Mets have now scored 22 runs in their past 3 games (3-0 record). That’s hard to explain. Their latest offensive outburst came in the form of a 12-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies Monday night. Because nothing cures a putrid offense like some Colorado air.

Brandon Nimmo’s 4-for-6 performance, with 2 home runs, and 4 rbi didn’t hurt either. One of those home runs was of the inside the park variety:

The Mets may revert back to their hapless ways real soon, but you HAVE to respect Brandon Nimmo’s hustle!!

Can you explain any of the above?? Good luck….

My Father’s Day Was Better Than Yours!!

Best. Father’s Day. Ever!!

I have everything a man could ever want: Amazing wife, beautiful children (including my son on the way and my son with four legs; Jordan), awesome parents, great friends, health, and happiness.

But the sports world….thought I could use more:

Kawhi Wants Out

kawhi-leonard-1-696x391

Kawhi Leonard leaking that he wants out of San Antonio Friday was my early Father’s Day gift. Kawhi, allegedly disgruntled, requested a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. While Kawhi can request whatever he’d like, he’s under contract for two more seasons, so the Spurs are in no rush to ship their best player out of town. At the same time, a disgruntled employee makes the Christmas Party awkward.

It’s eerily similar to Kyrie Irving asking out of Cleveland. Many were confused why Kyrie would throw annual trips to the NBA Finals alongside the world’s best player in the toilet for his own spotlight. And now, we should remain confused why Kawhi doesn’t want to play under the tutelage of the world’s best coach. Rather than try to understand an NBA star’s mindset, we’ll simply understand the NBA is ruled by its stars.

So, Kawhi will get traded.

Sooner, rather than later.

Mexico Takes Down Germany

MEXICO-1-640x330

There was no better gift than what Sunday morning brought DaveTalksSports; a Mexico victory over Germany!!!!

While the entire world, besides Mexico (and my house), thought Mexico had no chance in Sunday’s World Cup match against Germany, Mexico overcame. They outplayed the defending World Cup Champions, capturing a 1-0 victory. The lone goal came from Hirving Lozano in the 35th minute:

If you weren’t sure if Mexicans get excited for their futbol team, just ask the earthquake sensors in Mexico City. Just seven seconds after Lozano’s goal, not one, but two earthquake sensors registered tremors. Experts are calling it an “artificial earthquake”.

THAT IS FREAKIN’ AWESOME!!!!

And Then, There Was Golf

brooks koepka

The U.S. Open was a great tournament. Tommy Fleetwood gave the field all they could handle with his 63 on Sunday. Brooks Koepka became the 1st golfer since Curtis Strange in 1989 to win back-to-back U.S. Opens. But the story here is Phil Mickelson….

Watch first, then we’ll talk:

Uhhh, Phil, what the hell are you doing?!

The answer would be CHEATING!! Last time I checked, you can’t hit the ball while it’s still rolling. I know that. You know that. But most importantly, Phil knows that. Phil made the conscious decision to break this rule, figuring he’d be better off with a two-stroke penalty than playing the ball from wherever it stopped rolling.

Some would call that smart, clever, or practical. Some would be a**holes.

Phil Mickelson should be ashamed of himself.

The USGA should be ashamed of themselves. This inane rule needs to be changed, as Phil should have been disqualified from this tournament immediately.

How was your Father’s Day?? Was it possibly as good as mine?? Use that comment section people.

Raise Your Hand If You’re Pretending To Be A Soccer Fan Today!!!!

Today is a BIG day!!

The World Cup begins. The U.S. Open begins. And the New York Mets look to score their first run of the season….

World Cup

Today, droves of people will pretend to be DIE HARD soccer fans. They’ll buy jerseys. They’ll take off work to watch “their” team play. Hell, they may even paint their faces.

world cup

And in approximately four weeks, they’ll forget soccer ever existed.

It’s actually amazing.

So, Mother Russia is your host, and they’ll kick off the World Cup with the 1st match @ 11:00 A.M. EST. They’ll take on Saudi Arabia, the presumed worst team in Group A. The rest of their group is made up of Uruguay and Egypt. In other words, the host country has received a cake walk into the next round. If only that was a coincidence….

Here are the rest of the groups:

B

Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and Iran

C

France, Denmark, Peru, and Australia

D

Argentina, Croatia, Nigeria, Iceland

E

Brazil, Switzerland, Serbia, and Costa Rica

F

Germany, Sweden, Mexico, and South Korea

G

Belgium, England, Tunisia, and Panama

H

Colombia, Poland, Japan, and Senegal

Team to feel bad for: Morocco

Landing in a group with Spain and Portugal just seems like slow, painful, torture to me.

Underdog with a chance: Colombia

If they beat Germany, and that’s the biggest IF ever, they have a chance.

World Cup Champion: Brazil

Neymar-in-Russia-World-cup-2018

Brazil is the Vegas favorite (+400) to win the World Cup. Having not won a World Cup since 2002 (pobre Brazil), they’re due.

U.S. Open (Golf)

shinnecock hills

The 1st round of the U.S. Open will be played today. This year’s U.S. Open is being hosted by Shinnecock Hills, right in my back yard. 156 golfers will tee-it-up on Thursday in hopes to raise that trophy on Sunday evening. Shinnecock Hills was last home to the U.S. Open in 2004, a tournament won by Retief Goosen.

The Vegas favorite this week is Dustin Johnson (+900). After winning the FedEx St. Jude Classic this past weekend, DJ looks to be back to his winning ways.

Not that he has a chance to win, but Tiger Woods (+1600) is playing in his 1st U.S. Open since 2015 (where he missed the cut), and last won in 2008.

My money’s on Jordan Spieth (+1400). Not a long shot by any stretch of the imagination. Just my humble opinion.

Worst. Offense. EVER!!

new-york-mets

The New York Mets’ offense is taking anemic to a whole new level. Since June 1st (10 games), they have scored 14 runs. That’s less, over the same time span, than some individual players. Evan Gattis has driven in 18 runs since June 1st.

The Mets are literally wasting Jacob deGrom’s prime. Over his last 10 starts, deGrom has lowered his e.r.a. from 3.24 to 1.55, giving up a total of 6 runs, and has only won two of those starts. THAT’S EMBARRASSING!!!!

Oh, and the Mets as a team, have lost 10-of-their-last-11 games. The near future doesn’t look any brighter either, with their next eight games on the road (Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies).

What will you be watching today?? Tell me in the comment section below.

One Liner Friday’s

peyton

Hello and welcome to another edition of One Liner Friday’s. Here you can find the past week in sports wrapped up in one line and one line only. Enjoy!!

Peyton Manning is very very very very very good at football.

Hey Flacco, I hope you had your notepad and pencil out while Mr. Manning was taking you to school (nice contract Ravens).

Seriously though, everyone should stop doubting Manning and his arm strength and his age and should just realize that he is one of the best to ever do it (NO, NOT 6, 7, 7 IS THE NUMBER!).

Something About Mary?

Oh Yankees, every time I think you’re going to return to form and storm your way into the playoffs, you go and do something like that.

In case you missed it, Big Mo blew a save (obviously against the Red Sox) and then who else but Joba the hut would go on to lose the game.

I still think the Yankees land the final Wild Card spot in the playoffs this year, watch.

I’ve said it about 10 times now, and I will say it again, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be handed his first ever loss by Canelo Alvarez on Saturday September 14th.

I am looking forward to 50 Cent and Justin Bieber performing for Mayweather as he walks to the ring though (how stupid is that).

Nobody thinks that Cary Williams wanted to fight Riley Cooper because he is a blatant racist do they??

Because that would be absurd!

Hey, uh, Geno Smith, we passed on you just like everyone else in the 1st round of the draft, and we are actually going to play Mark ‘the worst quarterback in the history of the world’ Sanchez over you, but now that ummm, oh man this is awkward, now that he happens to be hurt THIS IS YOUR OFFENSE AND IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN!!

Yeah, I think he believes you and he’s buying the vote of confidence.

And if he’s not I certainly am.

It has been one of the most spectacular and impressive careers in the history of sports, but Roger Federer is officially on the Decline.

2013 became the first year he hasn’t reached a single Grand Slam Final since 2002 (back before he was the R-FED).

His career is not over, and I think he will make a comeback and have a nice showing in 2014 before he rides off into the sunset, but this is the first of many tributes to one of the finest athletes of all time.

Hey, uh, Andy Murray, I know you’re really busy being the ugliest man in the world, but a player of your stature should never lose in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

You know, instead of suspending Ryan Braun for the rest of the season, they should have just suspended him for 4.5 innings.

No?

Oh, that only works for privileged stuck up little children in College Football, my bad.

Who gives out a suspension of half of a game?!?!?

That’s like taking a convicted felon and saying, you know what we’re going to do, forget the whole prison thing, we are just going to give you about 25 minutes in the pink timeout chair in the corner (obviously the timeout chair is pink).

Thanks for reading everyone, and if you have your own one liner’s that you want to post, please feel free to do so in the comment section below. Enjoy your weekend everyone!!

One Liner Friday’s

20130726-065034.jpg

Hello and welcome back to another edition of One Liner Friday’s. Here you can find the past week in sports wrapped up in one line and one line only. Enjoy!!

Hey what do you know, Bill Belichick does have a heart.

I was actually starting to wonder if he was a robot.

Has anyone seen that picture of Tyson Chandler in a pair of shorts?

Forget one line, I have one word for Tyson Chandler : SQUATS!

I know virtually no one has noticed, but we must be in bizarro world because the U.S. Men’s Soccer team has won 9 games in a row!

Dear Derek Rose, I love the confidence, but you must be high as a kite to say that you are the best player in the NBA.

We all know you didn’t play any games last year, but apparently you didn’t watch any games either.

The Hefty Lefty shot a remarkable final round 66 to win the Open Championship, I’m just glad there were no tents in his way this year.

From now on, I think Tiger Woods should wear Pink on Sundays.

Is anyone else tired of hearing about A-Rod?

Here, I will be taking a stand against the meaningless A-Rod drivel that everyone else is pushing.

I will give you one last line: he cheated and lied, but he’s clearly The Yankees best option at 3rd base so play him until he gets suspended.

Isn’t it sad though that The Yankees are going to rely on Alfonso Soriano to be their savior?

Wait a minute, Alfonso Soriano, Derek Jeter, Andy Pettite, and Mariano Rivera, where is Chuck Knoblauch when you need him?

Lebron left his city, now he’s turning his back on his own country, what’s next? (Maybe he’ll move to Canada)

Ryan Braun bet his life and he’s still alive and Aaron Rodgers bet his salary and he’s still living large, let’s bring out the electric chair so we can move on with our day. #welchonabet

Matt Ryan gets paid!!!!!!

Apparently winning 1 career playoff game is the new benchmark for a $100 million dollar contract.

So big hits at the college level are now cause for ejection, I’m glad the NCAA is attempting to completely ruin another aspect of their game, what a shocker.

They might as well put tutu’s on these guys and let them hit each other with pillows.

Football is a violent sport, let’s leave it that way!!

Speaking of football, Jaws must be sharing Derek Rose’s stash if he thinks Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan are both better than Drew Brees.

On a serious note: I feel horrible for Tim Hudson, who over the past 15 years has been one of the most solid and consistent pitchers in all of baseball.

I feel really bad that he got injured the way he did, and I hope he is able to return to form and pitch in the Major League’s again.

The Mets are not just ruining their own players careers, but have now figured out how to ruin their opponents careers too.

Jaromir Jagr was born during World War II, and he is still playing in the NHL; amazing.

With the start of training camp it’s time to get excited about football, but I think it’s cute that Jets fans are actually convinced that they can win 9 games this year.

4 spot, if they’re lucky.

Have a nice weekend everybody!!

One Liner Friday’s

20130628-095243.jpg

Hello, and welcome to another edition of One Liner Friday’s. This is my 2nd post of the day so make sure you scroll down to read my review of Thursday night’s NBA Draft.

So if the Yankees can score some runs that would be cool.

You know those silly movies like Home Alone where they put down 5 marbles and the bad guys all slip and fall?

Yeah, that’s Wimbledon.

Aaron Hernandez took a lottery ticket and used it as Charmin Ultra Soft.

As I predicted last Friday, Hernandez was charged with murder, and I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison regretting his miserable existence.

In all seriousness though I feel really bad for his baby girl.

Not so seriously though, how can the best basketball player that ever lived be such a bad judge of talent?

Michael Jordan is a worse NBA Executive than he was a baseball player.

Doc Rivers is goin goin back back to Cali.

In other NBA news, the Brooklyn Nets actually believe it is 2005 with the finalization of a trade for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.

Most of these guys are way past their prime.

Some of them never had a prime.

This guys dead!

Major League, great movie.

I guess Tim Tebow really is going to be the Patriots tight end.

Doesn’t that make you sick to your stomach?

Hey Yasiel Puig, there’s a wall there someone should, uh move it.

Matt Harvey is really good at baseball.

The Mets should pray that Zach Wheeler is even half as good, maybe then they’ll come close to .500.

Not likely though, I mean they are the Mets.

Brian Cashman dropping F bombs!!

Personally I love it, A-Rod needs to shut his trap.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Well That Was Exciting…… Not!!

Tuesday night’s soccer match of the United States vs. Mexico was a harsh reminder as to why I don’t watch soccer. Even avid soccer fans can’t honestly tell me they enjoyed watching that match. For those of you who missed it, the United States and Mexico played to a 0-0 tie last night. No that’s not a typo, this game showcased 0 goals. This match was the third of 10 total World Cup qualifying matches these teams will play. With the tie, The United States fell to 3rd in the CONCACAF standings (1-1-1), while Mexico remains in 5th in the same standings (0-0-3). The top 3 teams will qualify for the World Cup. Mexico is highly regarded as the best team in this group, and barring a major injury or meltdown they will represent their country in the 2014 World Cup. The United States will most likely find themselves in the 2014 World Cup as well, but it won’t be because they break any goal scoring records. And that brings me to my thoughts on last nights game.

I continue to hear all the commentators say, well this was a solid performance by the United States, and their fans should feel great about what transpired on Tuesday night. To that I say, are you kidding me? Mexico dominated every aspect of this soccer match except for the final score. Yes, it is a fact that Mexico did not score a goal in this match. However, that doesn’t mean that United States played really well. Their defense was very good, but it was not without some luck and some questionable non-calls. Let me throw out some statistics to support my position before I continue on my rant. Mexico outshot the United States 19 to 1. 1?!?!?! 1 stinking shot is all you could muster up in a 90 minute match? If you didn’t watch this match, let me be the first to tell you that that shot wasn’t even a real shot. It was from about 8 miles away from the goal, and it didn’t even end up on net! Mexico literally could have played without a goalie and this match would have ended with the same final score. Mexico possessed the ball for 58% of the match, and found themselves with a clear advantage in corner kicks as well (15-2). Now, everyone can keep telling me that the U.S.’s defense was spectacular, and that’s all well and good, but that style of play is not going to cut it against good teams. You are also not going to allow 19 shots and 15 corners and expect to come away with a shutout on a consistent basis. Now, I must give The United States credit for the final result of last nights match. Azteca is one of the most difficult venues to play in, but the U.S. hung tough. Regardless of what it looked like they still came away with a point IN Mexico. That is a rare feat, as it is only the 2nd time in the history of World Cup qualifiers that they didn’t leave Mexico empty handed. Now just like any close match, it wasn’t free of controversy. Mexico’s players did their fair share of complaining during and after the match. Early on in the game, “Chicharito” was positioning himself inside the box to await a pass. As he entered the box he flew forward away from a U.S. defender (Michael Bradley) as if he were shot out of a canon. There was no whistle blown, no penalty shot awarded, and to that I applaud the referee. In a sport filled with “talented” flop artists it is difficult to differentiate a penalty from an acting job. It is the hardest sport to officiate, and the referee got that call right. Now, a play that was far more controversial came in the 76th minute. Javier Aquino of Mexico was feet away from the goal and was gearing up for a shot on net. Freddy Edu of the U.S. snuck up behind Aquino and disrupted the shot attempt. It appeared that Edu caught Aquino’s foot and that he tripped him up. Play continued without a call and the United States pulled out their violins to give the Mexican squad some background music for their crying and complaining. In sports there are missed calls everyday. Unfortunately it is part of the game. Personally I thought it was a penalty, and Mexico should have been awarded a penalty shot. Fortunately for the United States the referee was checking out a cute girl in the stands instead of doing his job, and the call was blown.

All in all the end result of the match was great for the United States, but my standards it was pretty ugly. Next time, I think I’ll go to sleep at 10 instead of 1230 in the morning. At least I know I won’t miss anything important.
