“I LOVE When Millionaires Complain About MONEY!!!!” (DTS Podcast – #104)

Sports leagues want to restart.

We want sports back.

Sports leagues are making it seem like they’re actually trying to start playing games again..soon.

And this has caused some players to start complaining about their salaries.

THIS VIDEO EXPLAINS WHY NONE OF THIS MATTERS!!!!

I’m Taking My Talents North Of The Border!!

Although nearly a week has passed, Islanders’ fans are still mourning the loss of John Tavares. No, he’s not dead, but he left for Canada (they’re almost the same thing).

John Tavares became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2017-2018 NHL season. For months, stories and rumors, predicting Tavares’ landing spot, floated around the NHL universe. The Islanders, despite their lack of success in recent history, did everything possible to convince Tavares to stay in New York….

  • They were awarded a site at Belmont Park for a new stadium.
  • They brought in the best general manager in the history of general managers; Lou Lamoriello.
  • Lamoriello brought in a Stanley Cup winning coach; Barry Trotz.
  • And Lamoriello had a successful NHL Draft, setting the Islanders up for the future.

All this….was for naught.

The New York Islanders knew this day could come. Despite drafting him #1 overall in the 2009 NHL Draft, Tavares is from Mississauga, Ontario (right next to Toronto).

“Not everyday you can live a childhood dream.”

tavares_bed

Enter collective sigh here  ————–>

Listen, the Islanders are not to blame here. It’s not everyday a diehard fan, turned professional athlete, gets the pick of the litter. And the top-pick of the litter happens to be a Stanley Cup contender, just footsteps from his childhood treehouse. Hell, I’d have made the same decision as Tavares. It just sucks that I also happen to be an Islanders’ fan.

So, Tavares will enjoy the next seven seasons, at home, getting paid $77 million along the way.

Oh well New York….

I guess you’ll just have to wait for another generational superstar to fall into your lap….

Who do you blame for John Tavares choosing the Toronto Maple Leafs over the New York Islanders??

I’m So Confused!!!!

I’m sorry, can you please repeat that??

No, I heard you, I just don’t understand….

Sports have never been complicated. Most things are easy to understand. But today, I am legitimately confused:

Win A Championship And….Quit?!

barry trotz

Barry Trotz, head coach of the Washington Capitals, won the Stanley Cup on June 7th. And resigned as head coach of the Washington Capitals on June 18th.

ron burgundy

No Ron Burgundy, that doesn’t make sense.

Trotz spent four years as the head coach of the Capitals. During his tenure, the Capitals had the best record in the NHL (205-89-34). And Monday, just 11 days after bringing the Capitals their 1st Stanley Cup in franchise history, Trotz said this:

“After careful consideration and consultation with my family, I am officially announcing my resignation as the head coach of the Washington Capitals.”

It appears this was a dispute over what else; money. Trotz made $1.5 million last season, less than 25% of the highest paid coaches in the NHL. Trotz probably feels disrespected, as he feels he deserves an extension and a sizable raise. While there was an extension clause written into his contract, if they won the Stanley Cup, the raise allegedly wasn’t walking ‘hand-in-hand’ with the extension.

Which means Barry Trotz will be the next head coach of the New York Islanders — hopefully.

Win THREE Championships….And QUIT?!?!

Zinedine-Zidane-goodbye-to-Real-Madrid-came-as-surprise-1000x600

Zinedine Zidane shocked the world when he left Real Madrid just five days after winning his 3rd consecutive Champions League championship. Zidane is creating a pattern here:

“I want to end with Real Madrid when everything is going well,” he concluded. “I did it as a player, and now again as a coach. This the right moment to end things well.”

Great players often go out on a high note. Barry Sanders retired immediately following a nearly 1,500 yard rushing season (1,491 yards). Jim Brown led the NFL in rushing in his final season (1,544 yards). But this isn’t often a move for great coaches. Zidane, just 45 years old, seemed to have a bright coaching future ahead of him. Instead, he’ll be….actually, I have absolutely no idea what he’ll be doing.

The Mets Scored A Run?!?!

surprise

The New York Mets applied to have their logo permanently placed next to the word anemic in the dictionary. They may have to rescind their application.

After scoring just 21 runs in their previous 13 games (1-12 record), the Mets have now scored 22 runs in their past 3 games (3-0 record). That’s hard to explain. Their latest offensive outburst came in the form of a 12-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies Monday night. Because nothing cures a putrid offense like some Colorado air.

Brandon Nimmo’s 4-for-6 performance, with 2 home runs, and 4 rbi didn’t hurt either. One of those home runs was of the inside the park variety:

The Mets may revert back to their hapless ways real soon, but you HAVE to respect Brandon Nimmo’s hustle!!

Can you explain any of the above?? Good luck….

The WAIT, Is OVER!!!!

To the streets Washington, it’s time to celebrate!!

The Washington Capitals and their fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief — and rejoice.

After 43 looong years of pain, anguish, heartache, blood, sweat, and tears (oh the tears), the Washington Capitals are Stanley Cup champions (4-3). Capitals’ fans could be heard, seemingly everywhere, chanting, “We got the cup!” and “Ovi! Ovi!”.

Although the Capitals won four consecutive games to close out the Stanley Cup Finals, this series was a battle of attrition. After eleven lead changes, and two one-goal victories, the Capitals proved too much for the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Capitals’ goaltender, Braden Holtby, outplayed his counterpart Marc-Andre Fleury. While Fleury was the primary reason for the Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup Finals appearance in their inaugural season, he would let up the final, decisive goal with 7:37 left to play. A goal that squeaked through Fleury’s legs, only to be slammed home by Lars Eller.

And then, there’s “Ovi”….

2018 NHL Stanley Cup Final - Game Five

Alexander Ovechkin’s impressive career is now a complete career. In his 13th season, and 10th playoff appearance, Alexander Ovechkin can now add Stanley Cup champion to his surname. Ovechkin’s 668th career goal would be a 2nd period, power-play goal. It was his 15th goal and 27th point of the playoffs, earning him the Conn Smythe Award (Playoff MVP).

I think it’s safe to say there’s plenty of vodka being passed around Ovechkin’s home-town; Moscow, Russia.

vodka

Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and Capitals’ fans everywhere, it’s time to celebrate (when the hangover subsides). While there is no official date for the Capitals’ parade, owner Ted Leonsis, is already expecting “a parade bigger than people expect”.

Oh boy!

Well, I guess there are worse things roaming the streets of Washington D.C. than hundreds of thousands of drunk, hockey fans….

Are you happy the Washington Capitals broke their 43 year championship drought?? Express your feelings in the comment section below.

I’m Sure You Won’t Regret This For The Rest Of Your Life….

How did you sleep last night??

I bet you slept better than James Neal.

“You Gotta Dunk That S***!!”

Neal, who plays left wing for the Las Vegas Golden Knights, missed what can only be categorized as THE MOST WIDE-OPEN SHOT IN THE HISTORY OF THE NHL Monday night. The Golden Knights were in the nation’s capital, looking to even up the Stanley Cup Finals at two games a piece. And with 15:31 to play in the 1st period, Neal had a chance to set the tone.

Instead, he did this:

Neal has scored 294 goals in his career, none would have been easier than this. To think he’s not replaying this opportunity in his head over and over and over again is naïve. If the Golden Knights fail to come back from a 3-1 series deficit, Neal will likely join Terry Rozier in that dark video room (accompanied by scotch of course).

If I could say just one thing to Neal….

dunk that

The rest, as they say, is history. The Washington Capitals would score three 1st period goals en route to a 6-2 whoopin’ of the Golden Knights. Evgeny Kuznetsov finished with four assists, becoming just the 4th player to have four assists in a single Stanley Cup Finals game.

The Golden Knights will try to continue their Cinderella story with a victory in game 5, in Las Vegas, Thursday @ 8:00 P.M. EST. You can catch all the action on NBC.

“The Catch”

The_Catch,_Dwight_Clark,_S_F,_Ca__1981

Dwight Clark, former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, passed away Monday at the age of 61. Clark who was diagnosed with ALS in 2015, died in his Montana home surrounded by loved ones according to his wife, Kelly Clark.

Clark is best known for “The Catch”, one of the most memorable plays in NFL history. “The Catch” led the 49ers past the Dallas Cowboys in the 1981 NFC Championship Game (01/10/1982). This sparked the 49ers’ dynasty in the 80s, as they won four Super Bowls in nine years.

The 49ers held “Dwight Clark Day” last season at an October 22nd game against the Dallas Cowboys. This would be his final appearance in front of a stadium filled with 49ers’ fans. Clark addressed the crowd, ownership, his family and more than 40 teammates from a Levi’s Stadium suite. That day, he said he simply wanted one more chance to be around the team he loved.

Giancarlo Stanton Vs. Mike Fiers

mike fiers

New York Yankees’ slugger, Giancarlo Stanton, doesn’t like Mike Fiers. Fiers nearly ended his career in 2014….

And Monday, in the 2nd game of a doubleheader, Fiers plunked Stanton again….

Stanton wasn’t overjoyed. Not even a quarter of his way to 1st base, Stanton had a few choice words for Fiers. Benches half-cleared, but nothing real happened. And in the top of the 6th inning, Stanton hit an ABSOLUTE BOMB off Fiers, to the tune of 456 feet. Some, would call it revenge. Stanton took it a step further with an epic bat-flip, and an extra special “point” in Fiers’ direction as he crossed home plate. I’m a Yankee fan through and through, but this was a pretty sad display of machismo by Mr. Stanton.

Holtby SAVES The Day!!

There are saves, and there are SAVES!!

The New York Yankees saved their series with the Houston Astros. Nathan Eovaldi had to be saved from himself. And Braden Holtby made the most spectacular save in NHL history.

Stick Save And A Beauty!!

Stanley_Cup_Capitals_Hockey_69148_jpg-bc748_c0-131-3726-2303_s885x516

Words, assuredly will NOT do this save justice. So, watch it. Then watch it again. And then watch it a 3rd time for good measure:

The physical save was INSANE. To be able to react, in real time, as fast as Holtby did, was an impressive feat. But the magnitude was what made the moment. Holtby and his Washington Capitals were holding onto a 3-2 lead with 2:00 left in the 3rd period. Alex Tuch found himself staring at a seemingly wide open net, until he wasn’t.

In a box score, it simply shows up as save number 35-of-37.

In reality, it’s the most spectacular save in NHL history.

There was an Alex Ovechkin sighting Wednesday night, as he scored a power-play goal in the 2nd period. Brooks Orpik would add an insurance goal later in the period, proving to be all the Capitals needed. Yes, Orpik’s goal broke his 220-game streak without a goal, but seeing as he has just 19 goals (regular season and postseason combined) in a 15-year career, this isn’t a big deal.

This series will now head back to the nation’s capital, tied 1-1. Tune into NBCSN on Saturday @ 8:00 P.M. EST to see if the Golden Knights can steal back their home ice advantage.

Yankees Win Another Series

luis severino

The Yankees. They’ll lose a game from time to time. But a series?! Hell to the NO!! The Yankees, behind Luis Severino’s magical arm, completed their series victory over the Houston Astros Wednesday night (5-3). Severino was dominant, again, striking out seven of the first nine batters he faced, and 11 over seven innings.

Severino is an AL CY Young award winner in the making. After finishing 3rd in CY Young voting last season, he’s on pace to hoist his 1st trophy at seasons end. Through 12 starts, he has three with double-digit strikeouts and has surrendered more than three runs just once. As long as Severino continues to pitch at an elite level, the Yankees will continue to win series, after series, after series, after….well, you get the point.

Eovaldi Yanked From No-Hit Bid

nathan eovalid

Former Yankee, Nathan Eovaldi, was activated from the DL this week and made his season debut Wednesday for the Tampa Bay Rays. Eovaldi shocked the world throwing six innings of NO-HIT baseball. And then….his manager, Kevin Cash, pulled him from the game. I understand Eovaldi was taking the mound for the 1st time in over a year, but the man had thrown just 70 pitches through six innings. Sure, Cash’s decision may save Eovaldi from future injury, but the world will never know if that was his only chance at history. Given Eovaldi’s less than stellar 4.18 career e.r.a., I can’t imagine he’ll ever have another shot at a no-hitter….

Was Braden Holtby’s save the greatest save you’ve ever seen?? If not, post your thoughts in the comment section below.

Getting Out Of Your Own Way Is Harder Than It Looks

One does not simply beat the Golden State Warriors.

mordor

The Warriors….beat themselves.

The Warriors Backed Themselves Into A Corner

If I told you James Harden would go 0-for-11 from three-point range in Game 5, you’d tell me the Houston Rockets would lose by 20 points. Fear the beard in December, shave the beard in May.

By the way, it makes me happy that James Harden is the biggest choke artist in sports since Phil Mickelson….

phil mickelsonSo, I’m not sure what’s wrong with the Warriors. How, the best team the NBA has seen in 20 years, can beat their opponent by 41 points one night and lose to them twice over the next four days is beyond my brain power.

The Warriors’ depth has taken a slight hit with Andre Iguodala missing the past two games, but that shouldn’t keep the Warriors from beating the hapless Rockets. James Harden and Chris Paul shot a combined 11-for-40 Thursday night — and still won (98-94). That makes no sense.

For the 2nd consecutive game, the Warriors carried a lead into the 4th quarter. And for the 2nd consecutive game, they wilted down the stretch. Kevin Durant, the world’s 2nd best player (it’s not even that close), went 0-for-4 in the 4th quarter. Down 95-94, with under 50 seconds to play, the Warriors had, not one, but two chances to take the lead. Both failed. And then, with under 10 seconds left, Draymond Green fumbled away their last ditch effort.

Watch butterfingers:

That is the Warriors past two games in a nutshell. They’ll head home, down 3-2, looking to force a Game 7. LeBron James, and his band of misfits, will look to do the same.

The Islanders Did Something Smart?!

lou_lamoriello_isles-681x383

The New York Islanders, despite their recent history, made a smart decision Tuesday. They hired the ‘GM of all GMs’; Lou Lamoriello. Lamoriello, best known for turning the bottom feeding New Jersey Devils into a perennial powerhouse, will take the reigns for the Islanders.

This is brilliant.

While Lamoriello will technically be called ‘President of Hockey Operations’, he’ll be the GM, the President, the CEO, the Mom, and the Dad, all at once. You don’t hire the best to ever do it, and then NOT turn over full control.

Lamoriello spent 27 years as the Devils’ GM. In their 1st season, they had a winning record. They made the playoffs in 22-of-27 seasons. And they won three Stanley Cups in five appearances.

Decent….

This hire is GREAT for a multitude of reasons. No Islanders’ fan should be upset, this week. But this hire was made for one reason; SIGN JOHN TAVARES!!

tavares

Apparently, Tavares is “pleased” with the hire — as he should be. The question, however, remains: Will Tavares sign on the dotted line for the Islanders????

Still have confidence in a Warriors/LeBrons rematch?? Is hiring Lou Lamoriello the best decision the Islanders have ever made?? Spill your guts in the comment section below.

If 7 Isn’t Your Favorite Number….It Will Be!!

7.

It can mean so many things:

7 days of the week. Lucky 7. The 7 Dwarfs.

7

But when 7 and Game collide in the same sentence, the world is a better place.

Eastern Conference Finals (NHL style)

alex-ovechkin-052318-getty-ftrjpeg_7513g6pe4b50zgp6p6q1ian9

The Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning spoiled us with a Game 7 Wednesday night. The winner, would face the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Finals. The loser, would get reacquainted with their couch.

It’s not often a game-winning goal is scored just 1:02 into a game. But Alex Ovechkin made sure of it. Check out his one-timed slap shot of beauty here:

Capitals’ goaltender, Braden Holtby, stood on his head for the 2nd consecutive game, posting another shutout, 4-0 (29 saves). The Capitals are heading to their 1st Stanley Cup Finals in 20 years, shedding the “choke artists” label one win at a time. The general public is now guaranteed a brand spankin’ new Stanley Cup Champion, as the Golden Knights continue their historical inaugural season.

The puck drops on the Stanley Cup Finals Monday @ 8:00 P.M. EST on NBC.

Eastern Conference Finals (NBA style)

Celtics-Beat-Cavs-96-83-in-Game-5-Lead-East-Finals-3-2-696x521

Stop me if I sound like a broken record….

LeBron James’ teammates SUCK!!!!

Oh, okay, I’ll stop.

It’s literally LeBron against the Boston Celtics. Now staring a 3-2 deficit in the face, LeBron MUST reach into his bag of tricks and pull out something amazing — again. If LeBron wants to see a Game 7, he’ll need to add to his list of 40-point playoff games.

Now, it’s hard to feel TOO bad for him, as he requested this band of losers:

J.R. Smith, Tristan Thompson, Kevin Love, Larry Nance Jr., Rodney Hood, Jordan Clarkson, and George Hill.

Outside of the occasional Kevin Love sighting, this is a REALLY BAD TEAM. Without LeBron, this is a 25-win team (at best).

The Celtics held serve (96-83), as both teams have done in this series, sending the series back to Cleveland. Last time I checked, you can’t win a basketball game with 83 points. Anyway, LeBron will do what he does, and will gift us another Game 7. And we all know what LeBron does in Game 7s….

Do you still have faith the Cleveland LeBrons will win this series?? If not, explain yourself!!

Monday….It’s Not ALL Bad

Monday.

The start of the week. The root of all evil — for some.

monday

Hey, dummy, instead of hating Mondays, why don’t you embrace the awesomeness it often provides.

LeBron

Boston Celtics v Cleveland Cavaliers - Game Four

Yes, I write about LeBron James a lot. See, it’s like when Michael Jordan was playing. Even though the Knicks fan in me hated MJ’s guts, I appreciated his greatness. I didn’t want him to retire (three times), but all careers come to an end. While I wish LeBron would don a Knicks’ uniform, and I don’t necessarily love him, I appreciate his greatness.

44 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals

He surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for most field goals in postseason history.

And he’s just two games away from his 8th consecutive NBA Finals appearance.

Just another day at the office.

The Cleveland LeBrons jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. They won the 1st quarter 34-18, and despite losing each following quarter, never relinquished the lead. 111-102 brings the Eastern Conference Finals to 2-2, and the momentum has fully shifted to the LeBrons. The Celtics will be happy to return home, as they’re just 1-6 on the road in the playoffs.

I’ll stick with my original prediction: LeBrons in six.

There’s Nothing Better Than A Game 7

Tampa Bay Lightning v Washington Capitals - Game Six

The Washington Capitals, the perennial disappointment, are looking to change history. Often lauded as Eastern Conference contenders, the Capitals repeatedly fail to live up to expectations. Prior to this season, the Capitals had lost in the 2nd round in three consecutive seasons. But Monday night, they forced a game 7, keeping their chance alive to return to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 20 years. Not since the ’97-’98 season have the Capitals played in the Finals (they were swept 4-0 by the Detroit Red Wings).

Behind the strong play of goaltender, Braden Holtby (24 saves), and right wing, TJ Oshie (2 goals), the Capitals took down the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0. With the Cinderella story, Las Vegas Golden Knights, waiting on the other side, the Capitals would be seeking their first Stanley Cup. But first, they must handle their business, on the road, in game 7.

Clear your schedule, and watch game 7. There’s nothing better. Trust me.

Wednesday, May 23rd @ 8:00 P.M. EST on NBCSN.

Juan Soto Thinks Age Is Just A Number

NationalsJuanSoto1stHR_1526951554275_5565556_ver1_0_640_360

I wonder what it’s like to be a Phenom. A 19-year old Phenom who jumped straight from Double-A to the Major Leagues overnight and hit a monster three-run home run in his 2nd ever MLB at-bat (1st pitch in 1st start).

World, Juan Soto. Juan Soto, world.

Naturally, since he plays for the Washington Nationals, Soto is already being compared to Bryce Harper. It’s fair, I guess, considering the list of 19-year olds to hit home runs in MLB history is rather short.

Soto is from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He’s currently the 15th ranked prospect in MLB. And he plays the outfield. Many expect Soto to have a long, fruitful career in the middle of the batting order. If he continues to show-off opposite field power, like this, he may very well do that….

Still hate Mondays?? After all the awesomeness I provided, you must explain yourself in the comment section below.

Best. Week. EVER (For Everyone Except Robinson Cano)!!

When all four major sports collide, special things happen in the universe.

Special, this week, is an understatement.

MLB suspensions, a new Monday Night Football crew, NBA playoffs, NBA awards, and NHL playoffs. Could this week get any better?!

Robinson Cano Suspension

robinson-cano-1-696x391

Everybody cheats. No revelation here, just simple fact. The professional athlete, by definition, seeks a competitive advantage. On the field or at home. Robinson Cano chose the latter. It was announced Tuesday that Cano had tested positive for the banned substance, furosemide. Furosemide is a diuretic, and MLB determined Cano used it as a masking agent and doled out an 80 game suspension. Cano has chosen not to appeal but made the following statement:

“Recently I learned that I tested positive for a substance called Furosemide, which is not a performance enhancing substance,” Cano said in a statement released by the MLB Players Association. “… For more than 15 years, playing professional baseball has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life. I would never do anything to cheat the rules of the game that I love, and after undergoing dozens of drug tests over more than a decade, I have never tested positive for a performance enhancing substance for the simple reason that I have never taken one.”

raw

While Cano’s suspension will begin immediately, the timing of his “punishment” infuriates me to no end. Cano broke a bone in his right hand after being hit by a pitch this past Sunday. So, while Cano will lose $11.85 of his $24 million salary (boohoo!), he’ll have the privilege of serving his suspension from the DL. HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?! Suspension time should not count during DL stints. That’s common sense!!

New MNF Crew

MNF-Team-MZ-Front-Featured

Monday Night Football is getting a much needed makeover. Fresh off retirement, Jason Witten (analyst) will headline the new MNF crew. He’ll be joined by Joe Tessitore (play-by-play), Booger McFarland (field analyst), and Lisa Salters (sideline reporter).

No one knows if Witten will be any good, as he has ZERO broadcasting experience, but he’s well liked (he’s got that going for him). Joe Tessitore will be an ENORMOUS upgrade over the most monotone voice in sports, Sean McDonough. Lisa Salters, a consummate professional, will be a nice addition to a program in need of professionalism. As for Booger McFarland, your guess is as good as mine….

NHL Playoffs
