If Only These Thursday Night Games Didn’t Suck

tnf

I must start today by sending my thoughts and prayers to anyone dealing with the effects of the earthquake that hit Mexico yesterday. This earthquake shook central Mexico, bringing devastation to Mexico City, as well as millions of people in surrounding areas. Sports is my passion, but it is not as important as family, and health, and happiness. Sports can also serve as an outlet, so hopefully I’m helping someone get through their day.

Mediocrity is Coming

“Are you ready for some football?!” I mean, crappy football? Thursday is almost here, which means we have a nearly unwatchable matchup on the horizon.

Door opens….

San Francisco enters.

Thursday Night Football has been kind enough to present the Los Angeles Rams vs. the San Francisco 49ers. How gracious?! The Rams are the superior team, however, it is a road, divisional game (never easy). I’ll be going to bed early tomorrow evening. But for those willing to watch simply because the NFL is on TV, enjoy watching an ugly, low-scoring affair. Tune into NFL Network @ 8:25 P.M. EST to endure the torture.

The Race for Nothing

Did you know there was a time when MLB didn’t have a Wild Card?? And do you remember when there was only 1 Wild Card?? Until 2012, when MLB implemented a 2nd Wild Card, teams would be eliminated from playoff contention way before September 20th (that’s today’s date for those who are paying attention). Regardless, MLB teams haven’t left much to race for this season. The Astros, Dodgers, Nationals, and Indians all clinched their divisions approximately 474 days ago. And all the Wild Cards are decided except two, the AL and NL 2nd Wild Card.

With 12 games remaining, can the Angels make up their 1.5 game deficit from the Twins?? And can the Brewers continue to take advantage of the Rockies downward spiral, and overcome a 1 game deficit??

I think both the Twins and Rockies get caught.

While this IS exciting, and this IS why MLB instituted the 2nd Wild Card, I’m not losing any sleep to watch Rockies and Brewers’ games. Sorry.

Yes, Golf Still Exists

And last, but not lea….Ahh, who am I kidding?? Of course golf is least. But I like it. So I’m talking about it.

Thursday marks the beginning of the final golf tournament of the FedEx Playoffs. The Tour Championship will be played from September 21st – September 24th and will determine the winner of the FedEx Cup. 30 of the world’s best golfers will battle it out for the right to be crowned champion. Mathematically, all 30 golfers remain in contention to win the FedEx Cup. Click here to see the scenario for each golfer to win.

While technically everyone CAN win, I’m not betting against Jordan Spieth (current leader). As long as Mr. Spieth is healthy and rolling them in, he’ll be my pick to win every week. Could golf possibly get more exciting?! IT’S PLAYOFF TIME BABY!!

Are you as excited about golf as I am?? How many minutes of Thursday Night Football will you watch?? Do you like, love, or hate the 2 Wild Card format in MLB??

Kindly answer my questions in the comment section below. Thanks!

Somebody Help The Young Man Lift The Trophy Please….

justin thomas

I’d say an unknown golfer won the PGA Championship, but every golfer is unknown. While golf’s search for a superstar forges on, it may have found something inadvertently — a youth movement. Your 2017 PGA Champion is 24 years old. He looks like he’s 12, but his driver’s license says 24. World, meet Justin Thomas. Justin Thomas is the latest to join the 20-something, 1st-time Major winners list. Is anyone else noticing a trend here??

Of course, Thomas’ 1st Major victory should not be overshadowed by his age or lack of fame. Thomas put forth a courageous performance on Sunday. While Sunday at a Major is usually reserved for insurmountable pressure and Major blunders, Thomas held it together as if he’d been there before. To see Thomas’ final round scorecard, click here. Thomas’ 5-under play over a stretch of 11 holes (7-17) certainly did not go unnoticed. It ultimately landed him a 2-shot lead he would not relinquish. The runner-ups, all finishing 2 shots back (-6), were Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed, and Francesco Molinari. A smorgasbord of who’s who….

Did you ever hear the one about the South African, the American, and the Italian who walked into a bar??

Thomas’ Sunday afternoon didn’t get off to an ideal start, as his 1st tee-shot found the beach, as did his 2nd shot. After finding the green in 4 shots, Thomas made a crucial 14-foot bogey putt. Just as Jordan Spieth found out en route to his 2017 Open Championship, a bogey can be the best thing that ever happened to you. Thomas bounced back, with a birdie at the 2nd. Thomas attributed his victory to controlling his nerves in times of adversity during his final round.

Of his 6 birdies on Sunday, he produced 2 memorable moments. After hitting a seemingly perfect putt on the par-5 10th hole, Thomas’ ball hung up on the lip of the cup for upwards of 10 seconds before finally dropping (no jumping up and down required). And perhaps the most memorable and important birdie could be found on the 13th hole, as he chipped-in from just off the green. The crowd erupted, and Thomas would carry that momentum to his 1st Major victory. With this victory, Thomas now ranks as the #6 golfer in the world.

That trophy looks too big for Master Thomas doesn’t it??

Thomas’ victory walk included hugs from golf’s most talented youngins, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth. Fowler and Spieth’s support, rather than jealousy, was evident. Spieth was purely happy for Thomas, as they are longtime friends. Fowler’s 1st Major victory as well as Spieth’s quest for the career grand slam will have to wait at least 1 more year. Knowing Spieth’s competitive nature, I’m sure he’d love to battle his friend, Justin Thomas, in the final group of next year’s PGA Championship.

Has golf found a new friendly rivalry between Spieth and Thomas?? Or will Justin Thomas be another flash in the pan?? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.

Mets Trade Jay Bruce For A Bucket Of Chicken

MLB: New York Mets at Cincinnati Reds

Good Ol’ Mets

Making fun of the New York Mets never gets old. You may say that’s mean, but if it’s always true, how mean could it be?? The Mets are bad on so many levels. And Wednesday night, they took their stink to new heights. They traded Jay Bruce to the Cleveland Indians for a bucket of chicken — literally. Okay, not literally, but they might as well have. Because trading Bruce to the Indians for 30th round draft pick, Ryder Ryan, a relief pitcher, is not exactly a good R.O.I. (return on investment). Check out Bruce’s impressive season here. The Mets, as usual, kept money as their biggest concern. They received better offers for Bruce elsewhere, but dealt him to the Indians because they took on $5 million of his salary. Wow!! That’s good stuff. It’s days like these I’m overjoyed NOT to be a Mets’ fan.

PGA Championship (1st Round)

Raise your hand if you’ve heard of Thorbjorn Olesen and Kevin Kisner???? Yeah, me neither. These fine gentlemen are your 18 hole, co-leaders (-4) at the PGA Championship. I must give credit when credit is due. My guest co-host on my sports talk radio show, Uncle Mike, predicted Kevin Kisner would win the PGA Championship. I may have laughed in his face when he said this, but I bet he’s the one laughing now. Kisner, while relatively unknown, is the 25th ranked golfer in the world. This speaks to the state of golf, doesn’t it?? Imagine if no one knew who the 25th best basketball player was?? Kisner has Brooks Koepka nipping at his heels, at -3, and my pick, Jordan Spieth had a rough first day, finishing at +1. Check out the full leaderboard here. There’s a lot of golf yet to be played, so we’ll see how Kisner handles the grand stage today.

Stupidity Epidemic Continues

Zach Randolph is an idiot. There is no other opinion allowed in this situation. Zach Randolph was arrested early Thursday morning on marijuana possession with the intent to sell. This charge is a felony, and he was held on $20,000 bail. The LAPD found Randolph and a group of people drinking, smoking, and partying in the streets of Watts. Police backup was required as the crowd reportedly began slashing tires and smashing windows on police cars. Sounds healthy….

This story infuriates me. If you’re Zach Randolph, what the hell are you doing smoking and drinking in the projects?!?! And why do you have enough marijuana on you to get an entire city high?? Zach, you are 36 years old. You have earned $175,124,765 in your career. You are set to earn another $24,000,000 over the next 2 seasons. How freakin’ stupid can you be?!?! I know, other players do worse than this, but that doesn’t make this okay. And I want to shake the faces of the people who say this is not a big deal. Hey, just because this story involves marijuana, and some of you are potheads, doesn’t make this acceptable. IT’S TIME TO GROW UP ZACH RANDOLPH!!!!

What do you think of the Jay Bruce trade??

Who do you think will win the PGA Championship??

Should the Sacramento Kings release Zach Randolph??

Answer my questions in the comment section below. Please.

There’s History To Be Made At The PGA Championship

spieth-mcilroy-split-640x360

It’s an exciting time to be alive!! It’s golf season!! This morning marks the opening round of the 2017 PGA Championship. While the 1st tee-time is set for 7:20 a.m., TNT’s coverage doesn’t start until 1:00 p.m. This makes NO sense seeing how the 2 most popular groups will be done playing by the time TV coverage starts. Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka, and Jordan Spieth tee-off at 8:25 a.m., and Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, and Henrik Stenson tee-off at 8:35 a.m. Someone please explain this to me….

Anyway, the 99th PGA Championship will be held at Quail Hollow Country Club, in North Carolina. There is an exciting field of mostly young golfers ready to entertain you. Entertain me clowns!! Expect a competitive tournament over the next 4 days, but before I tell you who’s going to win, let’s meet the favorites:

  • Rory Mcilroy (+700)
  • Jordan Spieth (+900)
  • Dustin Johnson/Hideki Matsuyama (+1200)
  • Rickie Fowler (+1400)
  • Jon Rahm/Brooks Koepka (+2200)

Despite winning the Open Championship just a few weeks ago, Jordan Spieth is not the favorite here. This surprises me, but Mcilroy is no slouch. My prediction is coming soon..relax!!

I think Jordan Spieth and Rory Mcilroy have something special in store for us this weekend. The PGA Tour is going to love what these fine golfers are about to do for their sport. They will separate themselves from the field over the next 3 days, and come Sunday, will be staring each other down in the final pairing. While Mcilroy has won 2 PGA Championships in his career, I think this is Spieth’s year.

Prediction: Spieth will beat Mcilroy in a playoff on Sunday to capture his 1st PGA Championship.

This will give Spieth consecutive major victories, and more importantly, the career grand slam. He would become the youngest player to accomplish this feat (yes younger than Tiger Woods). Allow me to put the career grand slam into perspective. Over the vast history of golf, there are only 5 golfers to complete the career grand slam:

  • Gene Sarazen
  • Ben Hogan
  • Gary Player
  • Jack Nicklaus
  • Tiger Woods

That’s it!! Arnold Palmer couldn’t do it. Phil Mickelson hasn’t done it. But, Jordan Spieth will do it. Golfer’s like Spieth don’t come around every year, so enjoy his dominance while it lasts.

Who do you think will win the PGA Championship?? Post your prediction in the comment section below.

A BOGEY Never Felt So Good

Jordan Spieth

It was the most impressive bogey you’ve ever seen. Ever. Perhaps it was the most important bogey of Jordan Spieth’s career as well. Spieth carried a 3-shot lead into Sunday morning at the 2017 Open Championship. With only Matt Kuchar (#18 ranked golfer) in the rearview mirror, it was Spieth’s tournament to lose. After a bumpy start, his lead quickly evaporated on the front nine. Spieth, however, saved his magic tricks for the back nine….

Sunday at a Major does something inexplicable to a golfer. It toys with their emotions and puts their feet to the fire. Or it just sends them on the craziest roller coaster ride known to man. Jordan Spieth surely threw up in his mouth once or twice on Sunday’s roller coaster. It was probably like that Tower of Terror ride at Disney World. Yeah, please drop me, unexpectedly, in the dark, like 300 feet, while vomit rises into my brain!! Thanks Walt!! Anyway, back to Mr. Spieth’s Sunday afternoon….

Spieth bogeyed 3 of his first 4 holes. His birdie at the short, par-4 5th hole was crucial, as it kept him from completely unraveling. He would add another bogey at the 9th hole, and to the unforgettable back nine we go. After a string of pars, Spieth stepped up to the 13th tee. He proceeded to hit a tee-shot so far right, it almost left the country. Upon locating his ball, Spieth was forced to take an unplayable lie. This means Spieth would take a 1-shot penalty to be able to remove his ball from this treacherous lie. By rule (Rule #28 to be exact), he was allowed to place the ball on the same line of his original lie and the hole, as long as it was placed no closer to the hole. After what seemed like 14 hours of deliberation, Spieth walked back to a driving range!! He was then able to hit a blind shot (pictured above) up near the green. After a chip and a vital putt, it was this bogey that saved the tournament for Spieth. Then, the magic happened….

It was a sight to behold. It was one of those phenomenons you’d need to see to believe. Well, for now, you can believe me. I’m a trustworthy kind of guy. Before we get to the greatness of Spieth, we must recognize that his past failures were a major (see what I did there) contributor to his resiliency on Sunday.

Imploding at the 2016 Masters may have been the best thing that ever happened to his career.

Anyway, here’s what Spieth did on holes 14-17: birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie. Allow that to sink in for a second….

That’s what they’d call 5-under in the span of 4 holes, aka a dagger in the heart of Matt Kuchar. And it’s not like Kuchar choked under the pressure. He went 2-under over the same stretch of holes. Kuchar, gracious in defeat, said, “Sometimes you have to just sit back, and tip your cap.” And tip our caps we shall. Because Jordan Spieth’s performance yesterday was as good as it gets.

At just 23 years of age, Spieth is becoming the superstar golf has been longing for. He is now just a PGA Championship away from the career grand slam. He’ll get that chance at the 2017 PGA Championship. Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina will play host to the year’s final Major from August 10th-13th. By the way, Spieth’s 24th birthday is on July 27th, so I guess he just gave himself an early birthday present. Keep your eye on Spieth, as I feel he has all the tools to become the face of golf for years to come.

Free-For-All Friday

STUPID

STUPID PEOPLE

Yesterday, Thursday, July 20th, was a really STUPID DAY!! I’m mad at myself for mentioning this story, but it infuriates me that it dominated SPORTS headlines ALL day (and this morning too). A criminal, who did heinous things, was approved for parole. And because this criminal happened to be a famous athlete 45 years ago, ESPN decided it would be appropriate to air their parole hearing. And then, they thought it would be a good idea to talk about this, and only this, for the next 18 hours and counting….

Talk about a pathetic money grab!!

And the part that pisses me off the most is Sports Talk Radio Hosts continue to pronounce that “WE were ALL watching. WE are ALL contributing to the relevancy of this story.” SPEAK FOR YOURSELF!! I did not and will not watch a single second of this garbage. I won’t lend a hand in allowing this criminal to prosper financially. Upon release, this individual will most likely sign a book deal or star in a reality TV show. And the IDIOTS in this world, who are sporting an IQ of 84, will tune in and be glued to the TV screen like hamsters on a freakin’ wheel. NOT ME!! NOT NOW!! NOT EVER!!

I’D RATHER BE GOLFING

The 1st round of the Open Championship was really fun to watch. Following Thursday’s action, the top of the leaderboard was being shared by 3 men, Jordan Spieth (my pick to win), Brooks Koepka, and Matt Kuchar. Kuchar is currently playing his 2nd round, and is even on the day thru 13 holes. Spieth will tee-off at 9:48 a.m., and Koepka will tee-off at 10:10 a.m. The rest of this tournament could get VERY interesting, because the forecast is calling for heavy rain and strong wind for Friday – Sunday. Having played an entire round of golf, in Scotland, through torrential downpour and 30 mph winds, it is challenging to say the least.

Now that, is good TV….

MEXICANS IN RUSSIA??

Mexicans must have so many questions for Russia. I know I do. That must be why they are playing so well in this year’s Gold Cup. See, the winner of the Gold Cup, along with the 2nd and 3rd place finishers, automatically qualify to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Mexico beat Honduras 1-0 in the Gold Cup Quarterfinal on Thursday in convincing fashion. Yes, a convincing 1-0 win. Mexico’s Rodolfo Pizarro scored in the 4th minute, and then Mexico coasted to victory. As for the United States, they will be in action this Saturday @ 10:00 p.m. against Costa Rica.

This is usually the part where the United States screws something up….

IT’S ABOUT TIME!!

The New York Jets’ 1st round pick, Jamal Adams, finally signed his rookie contract. Thursday night, the former LSU safety put pen to paper, reportedly signing a 4-year, $22.2 million contract (fully guaranteed). Adams will report to training camp on July 28th and will look to become the leader of a young, rebuilding franchise. As bad as the Jets are going to be this year, I’m really excited to watch Adams play. Everything about him screams NFL stud. As long as he can avoid the circus that is the Jets, and keep his mind focused on football, he should be a staple in the Jets’ secondary for the next decade.

Man..I’m excited for football!!

It’s Time To Hit The Links!!

open championship

It’s 5:57 in the a.m. and that means one thing, it’s time for some golf!! That’s right sports fans, today marks the first round of the Open Championship. Playing host for the 10th time, is Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. I’m excited!! With a 5-hour time difference from New York, the players have already hit the links. Your early leaders are Ian Poulter and Justin Rose (2 Englishmen) at -2. Expect to see many European players in contention throughout the week. Golf in England, Scotland, and Ireland is a different animal. It is ‘links style’. This means there are less trees but more fescue. And there are fairway bunkers as deep as a basketball hoop. I’ve played golf in Scotland. There’s nothing like hitting a ball right down the middle of the fairway only to find out it ran into a bunker!!

Anyway….

Your most exciting pairing today is Jordan Spieth and Henrik Stenson. They are currently on the course, both standing at -1 thru 5 holes. Jordan Spieth is the #3 ranked golfer in the world, and Henrik Stenson is the defending champion. Last year’s Open Championship was played at Royal Troon in Scotland. Stenson shot a record breaking -20 to win his first Major. Royal Troon is one of the courses I was blessed to play while in Scotland (14 years ago). I’m no professional, but let me tell you, that course is FREAKIN’ HARD!! Granted my dad and I were fresh off the plane, and we played in 40 mph wind, but that course ate me alive. My 12-handicap quickly doubled, as I shot a 96 that day. The sea was angry that day my friends. That’s the worst round of golf I’ve played since I was 12 years old by the way.

Anyway….

As evidenced in the 2017 U.S. Open, golf is struggling to find a consistent superstar to latch onto. This is something the sport of golf has been longing for ever since Tiger Woods disappeared from the scene. It seemed that Jordan Spieth was going to assume the role as the face of golf, but after an incredible 2015 season, Spieth’s game has moved in the wrong direction. He’s still playing at a high level, however, winning 2 Majors in the same year (2015) seems like a lifetime ago. Maybe we were spoiled by Tiger Woods. Or maybe we just enjoy watching history be made right in front of our eyes. Or maybe we feel the need to root for someone, rather than simply just enjoying the event. Or maybe it’s a combination of these 3 things.

Golf isn’t dead, but it’s battery has died, and it needs a jump in order to make it home. The PGA is also pushing another name, Jon Rahm. Rahm is a 22-year old, budding star. He has just 1 PGA tour victory on his resume but is still the 3rd favorite to win this tournament. Yeahhhh, I’d say they want him to win.

I know I’ll be watching this week’s Open Championship, but I’m about the craziest sports fan you’ll ever meet. What about you, the casual sports fan?? Will you be glued to the TV, watching every drive, chip, and putt?? While I hope so, I highly doubt it.

Oh yeah, come Sunday, Jordan Spieth will be hoisting the trophy. Book it!!
