“Rain Dances Are Real.” (DTS Podcast – #67)

Apparently, when I do rain dances, they work.

Who knew?!?!

Game 4 being postponed benefits the Yankees on many levels. Now, all they need is Gary Sanchez to pull his bat out of his a** and start hitting.

And one last time for good measure….

LeBron James, do us all a favor, and STOP TALKING!!!!

“It’s Good To Know The Only Thing LeBron Cares About Is Money….” (DTS Podcast – #66)

LeBron James has made himself perfectly clear, sort of, not really, well NOT AT ALL ACTUALLY!!

I wonder what it’s like to tell the world someone else is uneducated and then speak in unintelligible gibberish….

All those who said the Jaguars wouldn’t get Two 1st-Round picks for Jalen Ramsey look very silly right now.

The Yankees need to do a rain dance..in a hurry.

The Nationals will lose every bit of momentum they ever had and will lose in the World Series….in 5 games.

Have an awesome, rainy day!!!!

“LET’S GO YANKEES!!!! (DTS Podcast – #65)

Aaron Boone mismanaged the bullpen in Game 2 of the ALCS.

But, the Yankees won a game in Houston, stealing home field advantage from the Astros.

That’s all that matters now.

The Yankees will handle their business, at home!!

Yeah, that was only about 2 weeks ago.

Rest In Peace Don Banks.

If the Yankees send 1 more player to the IL, I’m going to scream!!!!

The Mets Still SUCK!!

Tom Brady is amazing. No revelation here….just good, old-fashioned fun.

Yannick Ngakoue swung, and Yannick Ngakoue missed.

We’re Doin’ And We’re Dyin’ Over Heeeerrrreeee!!!!

Extra games. Extra innings. Extra FUN!!

That’s what the young MLB postseason has brought home from the toy store.

Starting with not one, but two, game 163s, both the National League West and Central divisions were decided in winner-take-all fashion Monday night. The winners, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers, were rewarded with an actual (five game) series. The losers, the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies, had the pleasure of enduring the stress of win-or-go-home Tuesday night. After an impressive 95-67 season, the Chicago Cubs had the displeasure of losing consecutive games, and will watch the postseason like the rest of us — from their couch.

A ruthless diatribe on the inane nature of the one-game-playoff (in MLB) will not be found here today, for one man can only belabor the same point so many times….

kyle freeland

The Rockies, behind Kyle Freelandthe best pitcher you’ve never heard of, took down the Cubs 2-1 F/13. The Rockies now have the privilege of traveling to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers in the National League Division Series.

This series should be a good time, as the Rockies have won 10-of-their-last-12, and the Brewers have won 10-of-their-last-11.

But….that’s enough talk about the league that will inevitably finish in 2nd place….

Tonight, the 100-win New York Yankees will face-off against the bullpen-gaming Oakland Athletics. Man, what has happened to MLB?! It’s win-or-go-home at Yankee Stadium, as Luis Severino will take the bump for the pinstripes. For the Athletics, Liam Hendriks will get the “start”. I’m not saying this because I’m a Yankee fan, but if they can’t knock this clown around, they don’t deserve to play the Boston Red Sox.

I mean..I dare you to name 10 players on the Athletics’ roster….Oh no, take your time. I’ll wait….

severino 2

Gary Sanchez, despite the uninformed public’s opinion, will be behind the plate (where he belongs). And the Yankees will waste a roster spot for this game by carrying three catchers.

We can dissect, debate, think, and rethink the potential outcome of this game until the cows come home. But at the end of the day, there’s no reason the Yankees should lose. And IF they figure out how to lose, don’t call the fire department….

Let the streets burn.

Score Prediction: Yankees 6, Athletics 3.

Boom!

Take It Down A Notch New York!!

Hey, you!!

Don’t jump!!

Step down from the ledge and slowly..walk..away.

While New York’s MLB teams are having polar opposite seasons, both seem ready to hit the panic button….

The New York Yankees

The Yankees have the 3rd best record in MLB (63-35). They’re in the midst of a spectacular season, on pace to win 104 games, and head to the postseason for the one billionth time. However, Yankee fans, alongside local writers and talk show hosts, are leaning toward the panic button — again. That’s my cue….

Allow me to say the same thing I said when the Yankees were 9-9 (on April 20th):

relax

Yes, I’m aware they’re 13-13 since June 22nd. Yes, I’m also aware they’re 6 games back of the Red Sox in the AL East. And YES, I’m aware if they don’t win the division they’ll have to settle for a (ridiculous) one-game playoff. But let’s stop pretending the Yankees are falling off a cliff. Offensively speaking, they either lead, or are in the top-five, of the following statistical categories:

Lead: home runs (162) and slugging percentage (.462)

Top-Five: runs (511), total bases (1555), r.b.i. (493), and on base percentage (.332)

And while everyone is freaking out, clamoring for a new starting pitcher, their pitching staff ranks in the top-five of the following categories:

Top-Five: e.r.a. (3.56), ks (977), saves (30), and runs allowed (382)

severino 2

Now, I’m not saying everything is perfect. The Red Sox ARE 40 GAMES OVER .500 (71-31)!!!! And while I trust Luis Severino, and the Yankees, in a home, one-game playoff against the Seattle Mariners, ANYTHING can happen.

Have I mentioned how much I despise this wild card, playoff format?!

Hell, if Severino pitches like he did Monday night, the Yankees’ postseason will be over before it starts. Which brings me to Mr. Gary Sanchez, the laziest man in show business. The Yankees lost 7-6 to the Tampa Bay Rays Monday night. While Sanchez wasn’t the sole reason the Yankees lost, he certainly DID NOT help their cause:

http://www.espn.com/core/video/iframe?id=24178715&endcard=false

Gary, Gary, Gary….

Gary Sanchez is the most talented, offensive catcher in baseball. Despite his despicable .188 batting average this season, he’s in scoring position every time he steps in the batter’s box. However, effort, energy, and hustle are not things you’re born with. They are not predetermined. ANYONE can hustle!! So, for Gary Sanchez to lollygag after a baseball, that bounced off his own foot, down the 3rd baseline, and allow a runner to score from 2nd base, is inexcusable. For Gary Sanchez to not run out a ground out, because he THOUGHT the play was going to 2nd base, is reprehensible. Side Note: It did go to 2nd base. And he was still thrown out at 1st.

While the Yankees need Sanchez’s bat in the lineup, he MUST be benched for at least one game.

The moral of the story is the Yankees will be fine. It couldn’t hurt to add a starting pitcher along the lines of Chris Archer or J.A. Happ, but I won’t freak out if they stand pat.

**For those who read this far….THANK YOU!! This is also a friendly reminder that I am a rare breed of human. They call me an ‘Objective Yankee Fan’.**

Check back with DaveTalksSports.com tomorrow to catch me tie a pretty little bow around the ineptitude we call the New York Mets.

American League Mid-Season Report

“Are we there yet?!”

No, but we’re about half way there….

As MLB teams approach the midway point of the season (no, the All-Star Game is not the midway point of the season), it’s time to get judgmental:

American League

Best Team – Houston Astros

astros

While I wanted to write the Yankees in , they simply aren’t the best team in the American League. When push comes to shove, especially in the postseason, great pitching beats great hitting. While Dallas Keuchel has regressed BIG TIME, he’s still light years better than every other #5 starter on the planet. If, and when, the Yankees acquire a good starting pitcher, they’ll assuredly leap frog the Astros.

Biggest Surprise – Seattle Mariners

mariners

This is the biggest surprise in MLB this season. It’s not even close. The Mariners, despite losing arguably their best player, Robinson Cano (suspension), have the 4th best record in baseball (50-31). If you can name five players on the Mariners, I’ll give you a cookie. Go ahead….

I didn’t think so.

Behind the performances of Nelson Cruz (20 home runs), Dee Gordon (21 steals), Ryon Healy (15 home runs), Edwin Diaz (30 saves), and Mike Leake (8 wins), the Mariners are quietly having one of the more impressive seasons in MLB.

MVP – Mike Trout

mike trout

While there are other worthy candidates for AL MVP (Mookie Betts and JD Martinez), Mike Trout is the best baseball player in the world. He has been for six years. Having played exactly half of the season, Trout is on pace for his most home runs in a season (46), to go along with 26 steals, while hitting .323. The man is not a man at all. He is a machine. An MVP machine.

CY Young – Luis Severino

severino

Luis Severino is the best pitcher in the American League. I’m aware of Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, and Chris Sale’s accomplishments, but Severino is outperforming them all. With the most pitches of 99 m.p.h. or more in all of baseball, Severino’s stuff is electric. He’s also singlehandedly holding the Yankees’ pitching staff up with one hand, while throwing absolute, unhittable gas with the other.

Check back with DaveTalksSports tomorrow for your National League mid-season report!!

Holtby SAVES The Day!!

There are saves, and there are SAVES!!

The New York Yankees saved their series with the Houston Astros. Nathan Eovaldi had to be saved from himself. And Braden Holtby made the most spectacular save in NHL history.

Stick Save And A Beauty!!

Stanley_Cup_Capitals_Hockey_69148_jpg-bc748_c0-131-3726-2303_s885x516

Words, assuredly will NOT do this save justice. So, watch it. Then watch it again. And then watch it a 3rd time for good measure:

The physical save was INSANE. To be able to react, in real time, as fast as Holtby did, was an impressive feat. But the magnitude was what made the moment. Holtby and his Washington Capitals were holding onto a 3-2 lead with 2:00 left in the 3rd period. Alex Tuch found himself staring at a seemingly wide open net, until he wasn’t.

In a box score, it simply shows up as save number 35-of-37.

In reality, it’s the most spectacular save in NHL history.

There was an Alex Ovechkin sighting Wednesday night, as he scored a power-play goal in the 2nd period. Brooks Orpik would add an insurance goal later in the period, proving to be all the Capitals needed. Yes, Orpik’s goal broke his 220-game streak without a goal, but seeing as he has just 19 goals (regular season and postseason combined) in a 15-year career, this isn’t a big deal.

This series will now head back to the nation’s capital, tied 1-1. Tune into NBCSN on Saturday @ 8:00 P.M. EST to see if the Golden Knights can steal back their home ice advantage.

Yankees Win Another Series

luis severino

The Yankees. They’ll lose a game from time to time. But a series?! Hell to the NO!! The Yankees, behind Luis Severino’s magical arm, completed their series victory over the Houston Astros Wednesday night (5-3). Severino was dominant, again, striking out seven of the first nine batters he faced, and 11 over seven innings.

Severino is an AL CY Young award winner in the making. After finishing 3rd in CY Young voting last season, he’s on pace to hoist his 1st trophy at seasons end. Through 12 starts, he has three with double-digit strikeouts and has surrendered more than three runs just once. As long as Severino continues to pitch at an elite level, the Yankees will continue to win series, after series, after series, after….well, you get the point.

Eovaldi Yanked From No-Hit Bid

nathan eovalid

Former Yankee, Nathan Eovaldi, was activated from the DL this week and made his season debut Wednesday for the Tampa Bay Rays. Eovaldi shocked the world throwing six innings of NO-HIT baseball. And then….his manager, Kevin Cash, pulled him from the game. I understand Eovaldi was taking the mound for the 1st time in over a year, but the man had thrown just 70 pitches through six innings. Sure, Cash’s decision may save Eovaldi from future injury, but the world will never know if that was his only chance at history. Given Eovaldi’s less than stellar 4.18 career e.r.a., I can’t imagine he’ll ever have another shot at a no-hitter….

Was Braden Holtby’s save the greatest save you’ve ever seen?? If not, post your thoughts in the comment section below.

Just When You Thought Your Tuesday Couldn’t Get Any Better….

Tuesday is my favorite day of the week.

Saturdays and Sundays are great, but Tuesdays never fail to turn that frown upside down. This past Tuesday, aka yesterday, provided a historic performance, a heated rivalry, and the dumbest trade ever. See, I told you Tuesdays are awesome!!

James Paxton Throws No-Hitter

james paxton

“Oh Canada, our home and native land…”

No, I’m not Canadian, but James Paxton is. Paxton, born in Ladner, British Columbia, made Canadian MLB history Tuesday night. He became the 1st Canadian born pitcher to throw a no-hitter — in Canada. Paxton’s Seattle Mariners kicked off a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday night. The Mariners won 5-0.

Paxton cruised through the Blue Jays’ lineup, needing just 99 pitches to complete his no-hitter. He also hit 100 m.p.h. in the bottom of the ninth inning. Of course, as in virtually any no-hitter, it can’t be done without some help from friends. Mariners’ third baseman, Kyle Seager, made an outstanding diving play with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve Paxton’s no-hitter. Following the game, Paxton acknowledged, and appreciated, his teammates behind him:

“What a defense tonight. That was amazing. Those guys were making every play,” Paxton said.

Fat, I Mean, Matt Harvey Traded

giphy

I’m confused. I don’t understand why anyone would TRADE FOR Matt Harvey. I’d have understood signing him to a Minor League deal, assuming no risk, but trading a real-life human being for that pile of flab makes NO SENSE!! But hey, it’s the Cincinnati Reds. Who am I to second guess such a stellar organization?!

This trade is an absolute steal for the New York Mets. Highway robbery. The Mets will receive catcher, Devin Mesoraco, as well as cash in the trade. The Reds will also take on the entirety of Harvey’s $5,788,978 salary. WILD!! While Mesoraco’s career has been sidetracked due to injury, many, many injuries, at 29 years old there’s the sliiiightest chance he returns to the 25 home run, 80 r.b.i. days of 2014.

The funniest part: The Mets are playing the Reds, so Mesoraco literally walked from one dugout to the other, and joined his new team. He even pinch hit in the ninth inning, striking out in a 7-2 loss by the Mets.

Yankees Brought Winning Ways To Heated Rivalry

Remember when idiots booed Giancarlo Stanton???? I wonder what they did Tuesday night when he hit not one, but two home runs against the Boston Red Sox….

That 1st home run….Have you ever seen a baseball leave the field of play faster?!

Heading into a three-game series with the Red Sox, the red hot Yankees stood just one game behind their enemy. But after winning their 16th-out-of-17 (3-2), the Yankees are tied (25-10) with the Red Sox. Divisions aren’t won in May, but it would be nice to watch the Red Sox get swept!!

Luis Severino continued his dominance, striking out 11 in six strong innings. And Aaron Judge’s r.b.i. single in the bottom of the seventh inning turned out to be the winning run. Hooray beer!! The Yankees will look to continue their winning ways Wednesday night when Masahiro Tanaka takes the mound against Rick Porcello. Watch the Yankees beat down the Red Sox @ 7:00 P.M. EST on ESPN.
