“Pat Shurmur….Smush Your Face Into A Computer Screen, Please.” (DaveTalksSports Podcast – Ep. #44)

Pat Shurmur, you are aware that playing well in meaningless preseason games against less than mediocre competition means absolutely nothing, right????

Oh no, you’re not?

Well you’re a MORON THEN!!!!

ANYONE ELSE WHO USES THE NFL PRESEASON TO EVALUATE PLAYERS OR TEAMS SHOULD PROMPTLY KICK THEIR OWN ASS!!!!

I don’t always play football, but when I do, I play it on an 80-yard field….

You’re Not Smart Enough To Outsmart Yourself

It’s a simple formula.

No quarterback, no Super Bowl.

In today’s NFL, it’s nearly impossible to win without a top-15 quarterback. Just look at the Super Bowl winning quarterbacks over the past decade:

Foles/Wentz, Brady, Manning (Peyton), Brady, Wilson, Flacco, Manning (Eli), Rodgers, Brees, Roethlisberger.

Throw Nick Foles out the window since he started just six games (three regular season and three playoff), and you’re left with seven future hall of famers — and Joe Flacco.

Door opens, seamless NFL Draft transition enters….

2018-NFL-Draft

#1

With just two days and counting until the 2018 NFL Draft, the world anxiously awaits the Cleveland Browns’ decision. IF the Cleveland Browns DON’T take Sam Darnold with the 1st overall pick, well they’d be….the Browns. The Browns are in an advantageous position, owning two of the first four picks. Barring a major catastrophe, the Browns should end up with the best quarterback in the draft, and the best overall player in the draft. Anything else will cause heads to explode.

#2

As for the New York Giants, new general manager, Dave Gettleman, better be smarter than he sounds. Okay, Dave, let’s go through this again.

It’s car, not cah. Smart, not smaht. Harvard, not Hahvuhd.

gettleman is a retard

Over the past few weeks, Gettleman has publicly expressed that taking a quarterback is not a REQUIREMENT with the #2 pick. This had better be the biggest smoke screen in the history of smoke screens. Taking a quarterback, in a draft full of good quarterbacks, IS a requirement, DAVE!! Especially when your current quarterback has one foot on the beach (aka retirement). Listen, I’m no Giants fan, but if they take Saquon Barkley or Bradley freakin’ Chubb with the #2 pick, I may lose my mind for common sense’s sake.

#3

maccagnan

And then, there’s the New York Jets. The circus of all circuses. This story is pretty much the same as the Giants, minus the smoke screen. Mike Maccagnan and company have been pretty tight lipped, and intelligent Jets fans appreciate that. The Jets traded up (from #6 to #3), guaranteeing one of the top three quarterbacks will be in green and white next season. They like the top three (or four) guys equally, and they’ll have the fortune of ruining one of their careers Thursday night.

Check out the full draft order here.

As simple as you need a quarterback to win in the NFL sounds, teams continue to try and outsmart the system (and themselves). And that’s why we watch. Catch all the “action” on Thursday, April 26th on ESPN or NFL Network @ 8:00 P.M. EST. Coverage will continue on both networks on Saturday and Sunday.

Check back with DaveTalksSports.com on Friday morning for a 1st round recap.

Will the Browns, Giants, and Jets ALL draft quarterbacks?? If not, who will they draft??

NFL — The Sport That Never Sleeps!!

Off-season?? What’s an off-season?!

The NFL knows no such word.

Just 32 days since the end of the 2017 season, the NFL is in full swing. The NFL Combine entertained the world from February 27th through March 5th. And the official “start” of the NFL season is just 6 days away. On March 14th, the free agency market will officially open for business, and numerous players will find new homes. Can’t wait that long???? Have no fear, random trades in March are here….

Alec Ogletree

alec ogletree

The New York Giants, in what many would call a surprise move, have traded for Alec Ogletree. Ogletree, formerly of the Los Angles Rams, plays a position of need for the Giants; linebacker. Here’s a recap of the full trade:

New York Giants Receive:

Alec Ogletree and a 2019 7th-round pick

Los Angeles Rams Receive:

A 2018 4th-round pick and a 2018 6th-round pick

I LIKE this trade for the Giants. At 26-years old, Ogletree is a talented linebacker entering his prime. He doesn’t come with a tremendous financial burden, as the Giants will owe him just $38 million over the next 4 years ($10 million guaranteed). Most importantly, Ogletree fills a need for the G-Men.

The only downside to this trade for the Giants is giving away draft picks. No, 4th and 6th-round picks aren’t wildly valuable, but a team in the midst of a rebuild is better served receiving picks rather than giving them away (ahem..New York..cough cough..Knicks..ahem).

This was strictly business for the Rams. Just 4 days after trading DE Robert Quinn to the Miami Dolphins, the Rams shed a combined $60 million by moving Ogletree as well.

Michael Bennett

The Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks are heading in opposite directions. The Eagles, fresh off of their 1st ever Super Bowl victory, are looking to make it back-to-back. The Seahawks, on the other hand, hardly resemble the ‘Legion of Boom’ that hoisted the Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl XLVIII.

Philadelphia Eagles Receive:

Michael Bennett and a 7th-round pick

Seattle Seahawks Receive:

WR Marcus Johnson and a 5th-round pick

This move is simple. Beefing up their defensive line gives the Eagles a great chance of dominating the world again next season. Tearing it down is the route the Seahawks are taking. Don’t be surprised if Kam Chancellor, Cliff Avril, Richard Sherman, and Bobby Wagner are wearing different jerseys next season.

Giants Waste Little Time Finding Next General Manager

Dave Gettleman

The end is near.

The end of a disastrous season can’t come fast enough for the New York Giants. With just 1 more loss in the way this Sunday, the Giants will soon have time to exhale and think about the future of their franchise. Giants owners, John Mara and Steve Tisch, will be able to discuss the direction they’d like to go with a new head coach and general manag….

Wait, they already hired their next general manager?!?! Yup. Just 24 days after parting ways with Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo, Mara and Tisch didn’t spend much time as eligible bachelors. I guess Elvis Presley’s “Fools Rush In” doesn’t only apply to love. So, who is this mystery man?? He would be, Dave Gettleman. Gettleman isn’t actually a mystery. He worked as the director of pro personnel for the Giants for 15 years before being named general manager of the Carolina Panthers. At 66, Gettleman will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience back to the Giants. Clearly, Mara and Tisch are impressed with Gettleman’s resume:

“Dave’s experience is unparalleled. He did an outstanding job as general manager in Carolina, and he was vital to our success during his tenure here. Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a general manager and a proven track record.”

I don’t dislike this hire. I just figured the Giants would take a little longer to hand pick the person who needs to put out this dumpster fire. At the very least, I thought they’d wait until the season ended. I guess not….

After interviewing just 4 candidates, Mara and Tisch were convinced Gettleman was the man for the job. The other candidates were interim general manager Kevin Abrams, vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross, and ESPN’s Louis Riddick. The Giants went chalk here. That is the Giants way. They’re creatures of habit. They don’t like trying new things. That’s probably why Gettleman will be just their 4th general manager since 1979.

Gettleman will have little time to waste, as he has multiple crucial decisions to make:

1.) A New Head Coach

2.) Eli Manning’s Future

3.) Odell Beckham Jr.’s Contract Extension

4.) 2018 Free Agency

5.) 2018 NFL Draft

Good luck!!

What do you think of this hire?? Like it, Love it, or Hate it?? Tell me in the comment section below.
