DaveTalksSports Podcast – Episode 7: “A Somber Day In Sports.”

MLB Pitcher, Tyler Skaggs, passed away at just 27 years old. It is a sad day in the baseball community and our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and entire family.

DaveTalksSports Podcast – Episode 3: “There’s Always Something To Talk About.”

I’m your host, Dave Ettinger of CBS Sports Radio Network, and in today’s episode I take a stance on netting at MLB stadiums, provide NBA free agency news, and call for a MLB “Manager’s” job.

July — Don’t Knock It Until You Try It!!

You say these are the ‘dog days’ of Summer.

I say….you’re an idiot.

There’s A LOT going on in the world of sports:

Wimbledon, The World Cup, MLB’s All-Star Game/Home Run Derby, and The Open Championship.

Wimbledon

Novak-Djokovic-wins-Wimbledon-2015_3324607

The Novak is back!!

After coming up empty-handed in his last eight Grand Slams, Novak Djokovic has reclaimed his spot amongst the games elite. His Wimbledon victory Sunday over Kevin Anderson marked Novak’s 13th Grand Slam Title, ranking 4th all-time. Maybe, he can finally put his personal issues in the rearview mirror and get back to not sucking at tennis….

While Serena Williams’ Wimbledon Finals appearance was impressive, she fell short of her 8th ‘All England Title’. Angelique Kerber dominated Serena in straight sets (6-3, 6-3), winning her 2nd Grand Slam Title.

World Cup

Vive La France!!

France is the 2018 World Cup Champion, winning their 2nd World Cup Title in 20 years. This leaves Spain, England, and Uruguay as the only World Cup champions without multiple titles. France capped off an exciting World Cup with an entertaining, dramatic 4-2 victory over Croatia.

Imagine being at the Eiffel Tower yesterday:

That must have been AWESOME!!!!

MLB All-Star Game/Home Run Derby

barkley

I have to be honest….I know I said there’s a lot going on in sports this week, but I’m not sure I could be LESS interested in MLB’s All-Star Festivities.

The All-Star Game is awful. Nobody tries. Pitchers make one inning appearances. The game has been known to end in a tie. And it’s not how I’d choose to spend three hours of my life.

But hey, somebody will be watching. Last year, while the All-Star Game grabbed 8.6 million viewers, it was not the most watched TV event that evening. America’s Got Talent was. Sad. Oh so sad.

The Home Run Derby is cool. I’ll put it on as background noise tonight, however, this year’s Derby is lacking the most important thing of all; Star Power.

The Open Championship

Allow me to preface this statement — with a statement:

My subconscious has NOTHING to do, in any way, with my rational, conscious thought process.

dream

Sunday night, I dreamt that Tiger Woods won the 2018 Open Championship. For those who skim articles, I’m going to repeat myself. I don’t think there’s a snowball’s chance in hell that happens, but I dreamt it. Tiger Woods is a shell of himself. While he still moves the needle (inexplicably), he has literally NO CHANCE to win a Major. Not now. Not ever.

Have a nice day!

Serena Williams Doesn’t Care About YOUR Expectations

Accomplishments walk hand-in-hand with expectations.

As crazy as this is about to sound, NO ONE expected Serena Williams to win Wimbledon. Don’t lie to me. I don’t appreciate it. Yet she’s just one match away from doing the improbable (nothing is impossible for Serena Williams).

See 316 days ago, Serena Williams was giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. And while Serena always planned to return to the game she loves, even she didn’t expect to compete for her record 24th Grand Slam Title this soon, “It’s crazy. I don’t even know how to feel, you know, because literally, I didn’t expect to do this well in my fourth tournament back.”

Ranked 25th for this year’s All England Championship, some felt she was ranked too high after a lengthy hiatus. Wimbledon, however, doesn’t play by your rules. They don’t concern themselves with world rankings. And with 9-out-of-the-top-10 players ousted before the 4th round, Serena’s path became that much easier. Not to diminish Serena’s accomplishment, but this is the worst performance by top-10 seeds in the Open Era. After steamrolling Julia Georges in just 1 hour and 9 minutes in the semifinals (6-2, 6-4), Serena should be well rested for Saturday’s finals.

702450-serena-williams-afp

Now, only Angelique Kerber stands in Serena’s way of completing one of the most impressive feats in professional tennis history.

See 274 days ago, Serena Williams was climbing out of bed for the 1st time after complications from child birth. Immediately following her daughter’s birth, Serena suffered a pulmonary embolism and blood clots in her lungs. While her doctors quickly had her on the road to recovery, she was confined to bed rest for six weeks.

Ahhhhh, yes, the realization is setting in for you, my reader, of the magnitude of Serena’s accomplishments at Wimbledon. To come from a near-death experience, to her 10th Wimbledon Final’s appearance in less than year, is not something human beings often (or ever) do.

See in 1 day, Serena Williams WILL win her 8th Wimbledon Title. She WILL continue to make history. And she WILL defy the odds.

serena

And all we’ll be able to do, is appreciate the accomplishment, and throw expectations out the window.

Prediction: 7-6, 6-4 (The Best Who Ever Did It — Serena Williams)

Tune-in to ESPN Saturday, July 14th @ 9:00 A.M. EST to catch all the action.

When Did Everything Get So Awesome??

In case you hadn’t noticed….

The Stanley Cup Finals is in full swing — and it’s awesome.

There’s a lot of awesome flying around, below the radar, waiting to be consumed. The question is: Can you find it??

Stanley Cup Finals

Vegas-Golden-Knights-1-1

The NHL will have itself a first-time Stanley Cup Champion; the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights or the Washington Capitals. But first, an epic battle to the death!! Or we’ll just play hockey….Either way. If game one is any indication of how this series is going to go, we’re in for a treat.

135 shot attempts. 52 saves. 10 goals (6-4). 1-0 Vegas.

A raucous crowd filled T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Monday. The towels started waving nearly 30-minutes prior to the drop of the puck, and they never stopped. Game one was fast-paced, competitive, and down right fun. For the first time in Stanley Cup Finals’ history, there were four lead changes in a single game. And after the Golden Knights took the lead on a Tomas Nosek goal with 10:16 to play, they never looked back.

But of course, this game didn’t pass by without controversy. With just over 14:00 to play, Tom Wilson lined up Jonathan Marchessault, in open-ice, with what many have deemed a dirty hit. You tell me….

Watch game two Wednesday @ 8:00 P.M. EST on NBCSN. You won’t be disappointed.

Yankees Win In Extras

gleyber torres walk off

Last time I checked, a win is a win. Although we put more import on games in August and September, games in May mean just as much. And when you’re the New York Yankees, they mean even more against your American League competition. That’s why today, is a good day for Yankee fans. After getting mowed down by Justin Verlander Monday, they bounced back Tuesday with a dramatic 6-5 victory (in 10 innings) over the Houston Astros.

The Astros carried a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth inning. Miguel Andujar led off the inning with a walk. And after Gleyber Torres stuck out, Brett Gardner launched a 2-run, game-tying, home run (his 2nd of the game) to right centerfield. Yankee Stadium, erupted!!

And with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Andujar set the table again. This time, for a Gleyber Torres walk-off single. Check it out:

The French Open Is Happening

serena-williams-french-open-win-feature-image

In case you hadn’t noticed….

The French Open is happening. It’s well under way, and it’s awesome.

Serena Williams won her 1st match, at a major, in 16 months, taking down Kristyna Pliskova 7-6, 6-4 Tuesday. She played a grand total of ZERO warm-up matches on clay, because, ya know, she’s Serena Williams. Her next opponent will be 17th seed, Ashleigh Barty.

While Serena’s comeback is impressive, this tournament is, and always has been, about Rafael Nadal. The 10-time French Open Champion improved to 80-2 in his favorite tournament, beating lucky loser, Simone Bolelli in straight sets (6-4, 6-3, 7-6). Nadal will take on Guido Pella in the 2nd round.

Don’t be surprised if Nadal’s new title, come June 10th, is 11-time French Open Champion.

Sports Betting Is Coming To A Living Room Near You!!

I’ll make you a bet!

Oh don’t worry, you won’t get in trouble, it’s legal now.

As of Monday, May 14th, all states are free to authorize sports betting. This is a monumental day in United States’ history. NO, I’m not exaggerating. This effects everyone — everywhere.

This result stems from a Supreme Court ruling (6-3) that abolished the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). PASPA, aka the Bradley Act was passed in 1992 and outlawed sports betting nationwide (expect Nevada of course).

Years have been spent trying to overturn PASPA, hoping to legalize, regulate, and tax sports betting. And Monday, persistence prevailed. The Supreme Court cited the violation of the 10th Amendment, stating it allowed federal law to commandeer states’ rights as it pertained to sports betting.

While this is a GIANT step in the right direction, many questions still exist:

  • Will sports organizations receive a “cut”??
  • Will EVERY state participate??
  • Will each sports’ integrity remain intact??

Yes, each sports organization is going to attempt to receive their piece of the pie. That’s logical, reasonable, and will happen.

college-spobet1-725x302

I can’t speak for Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, South Dakota, etc., but every state SHOULD participate. It’s a money making venture, and last I checked, states are in the money making business.

Integrity. It’s a funny word. Does such a thing exist?? If so, does it exist in sports betting?! People are funny. Integrity exists in 95% of people — everywhere. There will ALWAYS be a small percentage, whether in sports betting, banking, religion, politics, etc., that will look for a shortcut. An advantage by cutting corners, that may, in turn, compromise integrity. That my friends, is called human nature.

So, to think the legalization of sports betting is going to compromise the integrity of sports, is laughable. That 5% already exists, you just pretend not to see it.

What WILL happen: Increased accessibility. Casual fans, who never imagined betting on the outcome of a game before, may be enticed to lay some action.

Forgive me, but all I can think about is Dumb & Dumber:

200

Lloyd: I’ll bet you twenty dollars I can get you gambling before the day is out!
Harry: No!
Lloyd: I’ll give you three to one odds.
Harry: No.
Lloyd: Five to one.
Harry: No.
Lloyd: Ten to one?
Harry: You’re on!
Lloyd: I’m gonna get ya!
Harry: Nu uh!
Lloyd: I don’t know how but I’m gonna get ya.

Classic!!

Sports betting, gambling, lottery, cigarettes, and alcohol. All can be harmful if utilized the wrong way, but where do we draw the line?? THAT is THE question. The answer, however, is an opinion. Mine believes freedom and personal responsibility are the answers. Unfortunately, they don’t collide in the same sentence often enough….

How do you feel about the legalization of sports betting???? Please tell me in the comment section below.

The (Actual) 20 Most Dominant Athletes Of The Past 20 Years

It’s the worst list ever made — EVER!!

And it’s not even that close.

In celebration of ESPN the Magazine turning 20, Peter Keating put out a list of the 20 Most Dominant Athletes of the Past 20 Years. The concept; great. The execution; not so much.

Keep in mind, this list is the most DOMINANT athletes, not the BEST athletes:

Peter’s “List”                                                                                   DaveTalksSports’ List

20.) Tom Brady                                                                                 20.) Marta

19.) Manny Pacquiao                                                                      19.) Barry Bonds

18.) Mike Trout                                                                              18.) Kobe Bryant

17.) Barry Bonds                                                                              17.) Allyson Felix

16.) Allyson Felix                                                                             16.) Diana Taurasi

15.) Novak Djokovic                                                                      15.) Rafael Nadal

14.) Cristiano Ronaldo                                                                    14.) Cristiano Ronaldo

13.) Lauren Jackson                                                                       13.) Michael Schumacher

12.) Serena Williams                                                                     12.) Lionel Messi

11.) Lionel Messi                                                                              11.) Jimmie Johnson

10.) Usain Bolt                                                                                  10.) Annika Sorenstam

9.) Marta                                                                                              9.) LeBron James

8.) Floyd Mayweather Jr.                                                               8.) Tom Brady

7.) Michael Schumacher                                                                 7.) Floyd Mayweather Jr.

6.) Annika Sorenstam                                                                     6.) Usain Bolt

5.) Roger Federer                                                                             5.) Lance Armstrong

4.) Jimmie Johnson                                                                          4.) Roger Federer

3.) Peyton Manning                                                                        3.) Serena Williams

2.) LeBron James                                                                              2.) Tiger Woods

1.) Tiger Woods                                                                                 1.) Michael Phelps

Honestly, I don’t know where to start. This is literally the worst list ever constructed by man, or woman. My head nearly exploded when I first saw Peter Keating’s list. I highlighted Peter’s most egregious errors.

I’m convinced Peter made this list strictly to garner attention (it’s working) because no one with a wealth of sports’ knowledge could possibly, rationally, reasonably, sanely, proudly publish this list.

  • The most dominant athlete of the past 20 years is Michael Phelps. He won multiple gold medals, in multiple events, spanning over 4 Olympics. His only competition for nearly 20 years was himself. He holds the record for most gold medals ever (23). For Peter not to have him on the list is unfathomable.

brady and manning

  • Tom Brady and Peyton Manning drew comparisons throughout their careers. They played in the same era, and they often met in the postseason. However, no one in their right mind would ever claim Peyton Manning was better, or more DOMINANT, than Tom Brady. Brady, simply, is the best football player that ever lived.

  • No disrespect to any of the following athletes, but they don’t belong on this list: Mike Trout, Novak Djokovic, Lauren Jackson, Peyton Manning, and Manny Pacquiao. It’s as simple as that.

Lance Armstrong no longer contests doping charges

  • Say what you want about him, but Lance Armstrong not being on this list is almost as egregious as Michael Phelps’ exclusion. Don’t start with me over the drug doping. EVERYBODY CHEATS. Armstrong won 7 Tour De France’s in a row. And if Peter is going to put Barry Bonds on the list, there’s no reason Armstrong can’t join him.

I hope this article lands in front of Peter Keating’s eyeballs: PETER, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!!

Did I leave anyone out?? Do I have someone who doesn’t belong?? Post your list in the comment section below.

What’s Your Name Again??

Who are you??

I’m sorry, I’ve never heard of you before. Can I see some identification please??

In the wide world of sports, many athletes fly under the radar. Some ride the bench, so they go unnoticed for good reason. Others, however, are “unknown superstars”. Today, we’ve comprised a list of the best athletes most people didn’t know existed.

Justin Thomas

justin thomas

Casual golf fans, if such a group exists, have heard of Tiger Woods. They’ve also probably heard of Phil Mickelson. But that’s about it. They probably haven’t heard of Justin Thomas. Thomas is currently the 3rd ranked golfer in the world. He’s already won two PGA Tour events this year, after winning five last year (including a Major). Oh, and he’s currently in 1st place in the FedEx Cup Standings. Not bad for a 5’10”, 145 pound, 24-year old man who could blend into a crowd easier than Where’s Waldo.

Whit Merrifield

whit

If you know who Whit Merrifield is, I’ll be impressed. Merrifield currently plays second base for the Kansas City Royals. At 29 years old, he’s looking to duplicate his success from last season. Merrifield was one of only two players to hit at least 15 home runs and steal at least 30 bases. The other; Jose Altuve. Colliding in the same sentence with the reigning AL MVP isn’t what I’d call a bad thing.

Nikita Kucherov

NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Pittsburgh Penguins at Tampa Bay Lightning

I’ll give you a hint. His team has the best record in his sport. Give up?? Nikita Kucherov plays in the NHL for the Tampa Bay Lightning. They currently hold the best record in the league at 44-17 (92 points). Kucherov, despite never having entered a conversation in your living room, is leading the NHL in points (82). Yeah, the 24-year old is that good.

Megan Rapinoe

megan-rapinoe-1024

How is that you’ve never heard of one of the best soccer players in this country?! Megan Rapinoe is an international superstar. Rapinoe plays for the Seattle Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League and is part of the U.S. Women’s National Team. Rapinoe was a crucial part of their gold medals at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2012 London Olympics. And she scored the lone goal in the U.S.’ victory over Germany yesterday. Shame on you for not knowing Megan Rapinoe!!

David Goffin

david goffin

If you were ranked 7th in the world, in an individual sport, you’d think people would know your name, no?! Well I’m betting most of you wouldn’t recognize David Goffin if you bumped into him on the street. Goffin won 2 single’s titles last year, and has been in the top-25 in the world tennis rankings since October of 2014.

Mario Addison

mario addison

I will be shocked if you know this next one. Who is Mario Addison?? Don’t go to the Google, that’s cheating. Okay, time’s up. Mario Addison is a defensive end the NFL. Addison has spent the past six seasons with the Carolina Panthers and may be the most overshadowed defensive player in the NFL. Addison is one of just seven players to average 10 or more sacks over the past two seasons.

Khris Middleton

khris-middleton

This one you may know, but his talent doesn’t match his name (or face) recognition. His celebrity status if you will. Khris Middleton is an extremely talented small forward for the Milwaukee Bucks. Middleton is one of only nine NBA players averaging at least 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists this season.

Had you heard of any of these athletes prior to today?? Don’t lie in my comment section!!

I’m The Greatest — No, I’m The Greatest!!

I am the greatest athlete of this generation.

No, not me. There are 4 gentlemen who’d have a legitimate argument if they said that aloud, and 3 of them were in action Sunday. The 4th, is preparing to launch himself to an unprecedented level of greatness this coming Sunday….

1.) Roger Federer

2.) Tiger Woods

3.) Lebron James

4.) Tom Brady

Roger Federer

The accomplishments of Roger Federer, at 36 years, 173 days old, are like nothing we’ve seen before. After experiencing a Grand Slam title drought of 18, Federer has now won 3 of the past 5 (2 Australian Opens and 1 Wimbledon). That’s just flat out ridiculous.

Did I mention Federer is old?! 36, in men’s professional tennis, is ancient. In fact, upon winning the Australian Open, Federer became the 2nd oldest man to win a Grand Slam (Ken Rosewall – 1972 Australian Open). Still not impressed?! The only 2 sets Federer lost the entire tournament were against Marin Cilic on Sunday. Federer would drop the 2nd and 4th sets, forcing a sudden-death, 5th set for the Australian Open Title. Federer, steam rolled, winning 6-1. And with every Grand Slam victory, Federer continues to break his own record. He’s now won 20 Grand Slams.

The question isn’t if he’ll win #21, but when??

Tiger Woods

Woods_Cut_1120_Getty

Tiger Woods is back!! For real this time. Playing in his 1st PGA Tour event in a year, and just his 5th in 2-and-a-half years, Tiger Woods impressed. He didn’t win the tournament, nor will he win a tournament anytime soon, but he made the cut and played through the weekend.

He finished 23rd (-3), playing 4 consecutive rounds without injury (which should be Tiger Wood’s main focus). So, while he won’t compete with Jason Day and Alex Noren in Monday’s playoff of the Farmers Insurance Open, Tiger Woods should have a smile on his face.

He should also spend his free time at the driving range, because he hit a career low 17 of 56 fairways (30%), including 3 of 14 on Saturday. No, I can’t shoot 3-under over 4 consecutive rounds, but I can hit more than 3 fairways.

Lebron James

lebron yesterday

Lebron James went about his business Sunday:

25 points, 8 rebounds, 14 assists, and 1 steal in 38 minutes.

The Cleveland Cavaliers won 121-104 over the Detroit Pistons. As crazy as this sounds, the Cavaliers can use every win they can get. At 29-19 on the season, they are currently the 3-seed in the Eastern Conference, however, they’re closer to the 7-seed than the 2-seed. This also sounds crazy, but another NBA Championship would do Lebron James’ legacy wonders.

As talented and accomplished as he is, Lebron is chasing a ghost. And ghosts tend to be hard to catch. As with every all-time great, I will never doubt Lebron James. Not until the clock hits double-zero and his team is on the wrong side of history.

Tom Brady

Tom-Brady

Tom Brady doesn’t often land on the wrong side of history. I don’t foresee that changing this coming Sunday. As Nick Foles continues to figure out how he got here, Tom Brady sleeps soundly. Super Bowl Sunday has become as regular an occurrence for Tom Brady, as a trip to the food store is for you and I.

With his (12) stitches removed, Brady is set to capture his 6th Super Bowl Ring. And like Roger Federer, will look to break his own record. When 2nd place is so distant, I guess you become your only competition.
