After enduring 17 weeks of mediocrity, the real stuff is finally upon us. Saturday afternoon, the NFL Playoffs commence with Wild Card Weekend. Despite the large “spreads” in each of the 4 impending games, expect entertaining, competitive football. And if all 4 games turn into blowouts, it beats the hell out of shoveling snow….
Tennessee Titans (5) @ Kansas City Chiefs (4) – 4:20 P.M. EST on ESPN
The Kansas City Chiefs’ season started on as high of a note as possible. They beat up the defending Super Bowl Champion, New England Patriots (42-27), in Foxborough, sending a message to the rest of the league. They started the season 5-0, and climbed to the top of the NFL Power Rankings. And then, the wheels started to fall off. They lost 6 of their next 7, including a loss to my wretched New York Jets. And then, the Chiefs flipped another switch, winning their final 4 games. You figure it out….
All you need to know about the Tennessee Titans is Marcus Mariota threw more interceptions (15) than touchdowns (13) this season. Also, Demarco Murray has been ruled out for this game. While the Chiefs aren’t a blow-you-out kind of offense, this is the 1 game that may get out of hand this weekend.
Prediction: Chiefs 31, Titans 20
Atlanta Falcons (6) @ Los Angeles Rams (3) – 8:15 P.M. EST on NBC
If going out in -2° is your thing, enjoy!! For the rest of the normal people out there, Saturday Night Football will keep you warm. Expect a high scoring affair between the ‘new look’ Rams and the defending NFC Champion, Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons have had a weird season. Some call it a Super Bowl Hangover. I call it regression to the mean. At no point throughout this season did I think the Falcons were a good team. Matt Ryan certainly didn’t play anywhere near his 2016 MVP level, and their backfield was littered with injuries all season.
We all saw what the Rams are capable of when they walloped the Seahawks 42-7 (Week 15). I don’t anticipate a whooping of those proportions, however, I do think they win handily. Todd Gurley will prove why he SHOULD be this season’s MVP.
Prediction: Rams 34, Falcons 27
To Sunday we go….
Buffalo Bills (6) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (3) – 1:05 P.M. EST on CBS
The Buffalo Bills are hoping to continue their celebration from Week 17. After not having made the playoffs since 1999, advancing to the Divisional Round, aka the get routed by the Patriots round, would be the overachievement of the century. With Lesean McCoy’s health in question, I see little chance of that happening.
The only way the Bills win this game is if Blake Bortles throws 3 interceptions and Lesean McCoy hits 100 yards rushing. Yes, Bortles is a walking interception, but I think the combination of the Jaguars’ defense and Leonard Fournette will ultimately be too much for the Bills too handle.
Prediction: Jaguars 23, Bills 17
Carolina Panthers (5) @ New Orleans Saints (4) – 4:40 P.M. EST on FOX
3rd time’s the charm?? The Carolina Panthers certainly hope so. The New Orleans Saints swept the season series with the Panthers. Yes, Cam Newton’s ceiling is WAY higher than most, but this isn’t his year. His own team traded away his top receiver (Kelvin Benjamin). Greg Olsen hasn’t been right all year. And their usually strong secondary, isn’t what it used to be.
On the other side of the line of scrimmage, the Saints aren’t what they used to be either — in a good way. The Saints actually have a defense worth writing home about. I guess firing Rob Ryan was a good idea. WHO KNEW?! They have the best rushing attack in the NFL. And Drew Brees is still, well, Drew Brees.
Prediction: Saints 30, Panthers 24

What does it mean to be valuable??
I’m valuable to my family, my friends, and the company I work for. And I’m sure you’re valuable to somebody, or something, somewhere….
But what does it take to be the most valuable player in the NFL?? Stellar transition I know. Let’s answer that question with a question. What would your team be without you??
The book is about to close on another NFL season. As teams make their final push for the playoffs, individual players continue to earn next year’s contracts. A select few, however, look to hoist the NFL’s MVP Trophy. In my estimation, it’s a 3-man race:
1.) Tom Brady (who else?)
2.) Russell Wilson
3.) Todd Gurley
Tom Brady
Everyone knows Tom Brady is really good at football. He’s the best quarterback of all-time, and it’s not even that close. And that’s his problem. The NFL, and every sport, refuses to give the MVP Award to the same player every year. Michael Jordan, could have, and should have, won the MVP Award every year. Same with Lebron James. Brady, at 40, is playing some of the best football of his career. His 67.5 completion percentage is the highest of his career, and he’s set to top 4,500 yards passing for the 5th time in his career. Oh yeah, and his New England Patriots are 12-3, just 1 win away from clinching home field throughout the playoffs. With alllllll that said, Tom Brady is not this season’s MVP.

Russell Wilson
Is there anyone doing more with less this season?! The Seattle Seahawks, at 9-6, are in contention for the playoffs. Despite having the worst offensive line known to man, no running game to speak of, and a defense living in the infirmary, the Seahawks are still breathing. All thanks to Russell Wilson. Wilson has an incredible ability to extend plays with his legs, neutralizing an opposing team’s pass rush. This also gives his wide receivers time to find holes in opposing secondary’s. Wilson has figured out how to make Paul Richardson look like a real receiver….
Oh yeah, Wilson is also the team’s leading rusher — by a lot. He’s still not this season’s MVP.
Russell Wilson’s Stats: 3,762 passing yards, 32 TDs, 11 INTs, 61.3 Completion % (550 Rushing Yards)

And then, there’s the running back. The NFL’s leader in rushing yards and touchdowns, Todd Gurley. From breakout rookie season, to sophomore slump-and-a-half, to MVP candidate. Put Gurley’s ridiculous rushing statistics to the side for a moment. Let’s look at Todd Gurley, the complete player. If Gurley was solely compared to wide receivers, he’d still be having a solid season. Here’s where he stacks up against the rest of the league through the air:
Receptions: 64 (T-26)
Receiving Yards: 788 (T-28)
Receiving TDs: 6 (T-21)
Yeah, I was impressed too. The NFC West Champion Los Angeles Rams (11-4) have a lot to be thankful for this year. For without Gurley, who knows where they’d be. Todd Gurley is this season’s MVP.
Todd Gurley’s Stats: 1,305 Rushing Yards, 13 TDs/64 Receptions, 788 Receiving Yards, 6 TDs
Stop looking at me like I’m crazy. I know this is a passing league. I know the running back position isn’t the most important on the field. However, running backs winning the MVP Award is not unprecedented. Adrian Peterson won it just 5 years ago. And 3 have won it in the past 12 seasons. And this year, there’s value in the running back position around the league. Look at Ezekiel Elliot and the Dallas Cowboys. The second Elliot served his 6-game suspension, the Cowboys lost 3 games in a row. Sorry Russell. Sorry Tommy Boy.

Thursday Night Football shocked the world!! Thursday Night Football did something for the first time since its inception. It gave us a GOOD game!!
I’m not going to lie. When Brian Hoyer, the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback, threw an interception on the 1st play from scrimmage, I thought this game was going to get out of hand. Click here to see the interception. Especially since Todd Gurley ran in a touchdown on the very next play. Despite being down a score 12 seconds into the game, Hoyer and the 49ers showed great resolve.
**I need to take this moment to talk to Ezekiel Elliot. HEY BUDDY!!!! I want you to watch the replay of that interception until your eyes bleed. Do you see what #88 did?? That’s 49ers tight end Garrett Celek. Watch how he runs after the player who just intercepted the ball. Then watch him dive at his feet, making a spectacular tackle, saving a touchdown!! Take notes because THAT IS WHAT AN NFL PLAYER SHOULD LOOK LIKE!!
Anyway….
Until last night, the 49ers’ offense was being tagged as one of the worst the NFL has ever seen. They had certainly struggled, as their 1st TD of the season came at 8:17 of the 1st quarter of last night’s game. But with all due respect, the New York Jets couldn’t score 39 points in a game if the opposition was only playing 8 men on defense. Outside of the early interception, Brian Hoyer almost resembled an NFL quarterback, Pierre Garcon can still rack up receiving yards, and a healthy Carlos Hyde is solid at the running back position.
As for the Los Angeles Rams, they put on an offensive show. They won 41-39. Jared Goff and Todd Gurley have put last season in the very distant rear view mirror. Last night, Goff was 22 of 28 for 292 yards and 3 TD’s. He’s only thrown 1 INT on the season and is leading a Rams’ offense that’s averaging 35.6 points per game. Gurley has returned to his rookie form, when he racked up 1,106 yards and 10 TD’s (in 13 games). Last night, Gurley had 149 yards from scrimmage and 3 TD’s (2 by land, 1 by air).
Some of you have a confused look on your face….
Oh! You want to know how the 49ers scored 39 points!! Well, the Rams defense (which is supposed to be good), looked like swiss cheese, giving up 3 TD’s in the 4th quarter alone. That’s how. Pierre Garcon had 7 catches for 142 yards, including a 59-yard reception setting up a TD for the 49ers in the 4th quarter, and Carlos Hyde had 2 rushing TD’s. The 49ers actually had a 2-point conversion attempt to tie the game with 2:13 left in the game. They failed.
A 2-point attempt was only necessary because of a missed extra point by Robbie Gould.
The 49ers simply wouldn’t go away. They recovered the ensuing onside kick, but after an offensive pass interference penalty and a sack, the game was officially over. And the 1st exciting Thursday Night Football game, EVER, was in the books.
You can tune into NFL Network next Thursday to watch the Chicago Bears visit the Green Bay Packers. If you’re into blowouts, this is the game for you!!
