Spring Cleaning In February!!

It’s time for some Spring cleaning!!

Yes, I know it’s not Spring yet, but it’s time to organize that mess and take out the garbage. Some NFL teams couldn’t wait until March to throw away their unwanted trash, so they started cleanin’ house yesterday.

New York Jets

You have to know when to move on. We all make mistakes, but not everyone has the courage to put the past behind them. The New York Jets did that on Wednesday. By cutting Muhammad Wilkerson prior to March 16th, the Jets will save $11 million in salary cap space and $16.75 million overall.

After signing Wilkerson to a 5-year, $86 million deal in 2015 ($37 million guaranteed), the Jets thought they’d solidified one of the most important positions on the field. They thought wrong. VERY WRONG!!

It’s funny how some players’ stats rapidly decline the instant they sign on the dotted line. Wilkerson earned his $86 million contract with a career-high 12 sacks in 2015. But over the past 2 years, Wilkerson missed 4 games while only totaling 8 sacks. He showed up late 4 times (that we know about), and he genuinely looked like he lacked interest in playing football. Thanks for absolutely nothing Muhammad!! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!!

Chicago Bears

Speaking of wasting money, the Chicago Bears know what we’re talking about. After signing Mike Glennon to an unbelievably bad 3-year, $45 million contract, the Bears have released Glennon. He was paid $18.5 million for his “services” this past season while only appearing in 4 games. That’s $4.625 million per game. That’s a lot of moola.

By cutting Glennon, the Bears will save $9 million in salary cap space and $12.5 million overall. This was clearly a smart move, as Glennon is fit to be a 3rd-string quarterback for the rest of his career.

Matt Forte

In combined Jets and Bears news, Matt Forte is hangin’ em up. Forte is calling it quits after 10 years in the NFL (8 with the Bears, 2 with the Jets). In his prime, Forte was one of the best dual-threat running backs in the game. In 2014, he rushed for 1,038 yards while also catching 102 passes for 808 yards. Even though, as a Jets’ fan, I didn’t receive his prime, I always liked Matt Forte. He played the game the right way.

Carolina Panthers

It’s absolutely amazing Jonathan Stewart lasted this long in the NFL. Who knew you could get paid millions to be bad at something (insert Blake Bortles joke here)?? Stewart has played his entire 10-year career with the Carolina Panthers and is their all-time leading rusher. That’s sad. Stewart’s release will save $3.7 million in salary cap space and $5.2 million overall.

I can’t believe it took this long to cut Stewart. This doesn’t need to turn into a Jonathan Stewart bash session, but WOW. One. Jonathan Stewart had one thousand-yard season in 10 years. I’ll be shocked if he’s working in the NFL next season.

As the “start” of the NFL season approaches (March 14th), stay tuned for ALL of the Spring cleaning moves that are going to be put out to the curb.

No Health, No Problem — Aaron Rodgers Dominates Bears

That wasn’t competitive. Not even a little bit. Just 4 days after the Packers were taken to overtime by a less than stellar Cincinnati Bengals team, they discarded the Chicago Bears in short order (35-14). As for the standard of Thursday Night Football, following last week’s thriller (Rams 41, 49ers 39), this game reverted back to the Thursday night stink-fest we’ve grown accustomed to.

Aaron Rodgers is a Baaaaad Man!!

Let’s travel into the brain of Aaron Rodgers and take a look at his unflappable mindset….

No offensive-line, no problem. No running back, no problem. Injured wide receivers, no problem.

It’s hard to argue that anyone does more with less than Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard of that Brady guy before. But Rodgers is playing without his top-5 offensive lineman. While everyone in New York blames the Giants’ offensive-line for their struggles, Rodgers continues to succeed with a makeshift o-line. Hell, the Packers don’t even have a running back….

Injury Bug

Their starting running back has been Ty Montgomery, until he left last night’s game with broken ribs. Now, they’ve turned to a rookie, Aaron Jones out of UTEP, to handle the running back responsibilities. So far so good, as Jones posted 49 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Montgomery wasn’t the only player injured on Thursday night. Wide receiver, Davante Adams, was removed from the game on a stretcher after a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit by Danny Trevathan. Adams was taken to the hospital and remained conscious, so the Packers are hoping for a speedy recovery.

Someone Should Tell the Bears the Football is Not a Hot Potato

On the very first play from scrimmage for the Bears, quarterback Mike Glennon decided he didn’t want the ball anymore. Clay Matthews applied pressure, getting a strip-sack, and the Packers recovered the ball. That’s sack #75 for Matthews, breaking the Packers’ all-time sack record. 45 seconds later, the Packers scored, taking a 14-0 lead. Glennon’s turnover problems didn’t stop there. He finished with 4 turnovers (2 interceptions and 2 fumbles). The question of today will undoubtedly be:

Is it time to start Mitchell Trubisky?? 

Trubisky, out of North Carolina, was the 2nd overall pick in this year’s draft (the Bears traded up for him). With the Bears sitting at 1-3, trending in the wrong direction, many will urge John Fox to hand the reigns to Trubisky. I’m part of that many. I don’t love quickly overreacting to things, but I didn’t think Glennon was good before his last 4 games. He’s simply not an NFL quarterback.

NFC North Preview

The NFC North is the proud new owner of the highest paid player in the NFL. No, it’s not Aaron Rodgers (even though it should be). That distinction now belongs to Detroit Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford. With a deal like this, you’d think the Lions represent the NFC in the Super Bowl every year. Not so much. Who do you think they are..the Patriots?? Oh, we finished the AFC Preview??

And now, let’s kick-off our NFC Preview with the NFC North:

Last Season’s Standings:

Green Bay Packers: 10-6

Detroit Lions: 9-7

Minnesota Vikings: 8-8

Chicago Bears: 3-13

You know the drill. Worst-to-first….

Chicago Bears

Da’ Bears are going to be really, really, REALLY bad this year. The Bears recently gave the nod to Mike Glennon to be their starting quarterback Week 1. 1st round draft pick (#2 overall pick), Mitchell Trubisky, will await his turn on the bench. Don’t get too comfy Mitch, for I think your shot will come sooner rather than later. Whoever is under center will lack the basic offensive weapons necessary to succeed. Wide receiver, Cameron Meredith, tore his ACL in Week 3 of the Preseason, leaving Kevin White atop the receiver depth chart. No offense Kevin but, wait yes, I do mean offense.  If Kevin White is your #1 receiver, you’re in trouble.

Key Additions: Kendall Wright, Mitchell Trubisky (Draft), Mike Glennon

Key Losses: Jay Cutler, Alshon Jeffrey, Eddie Royal

Detroit Lions

Monday evening, Matthew Stafford reportedly agreed on a 5-year extension with the Detroit Lions. This deal will make the 29 year-old quarterback the highest paid player in the NFL. SAY WHAT?! Yes, you read that right. Matthew Stafford is set to make 27 million dollars per year. The reported 92 million dollars in guaranteed money would be the highest of any contract in NFL history. And does all this mean the Lions will be good this season?? It most certainly does not!! Expect an extremely average performance by Mr. Stafford and company.

Key Additions: T.J. Lang, Greg Robinson, D.J. Hayden 

Key Losses: Anquan Boldin, Larry Warford, Riley Reiff 

Minnesota Vikings

Oh Minnesota. What could have been?? To start 5-0 and miss the playoffs is not easy to accomplish. They won’t however, have to worry about starting 5-0 this year. The Vikings still have a stellar defense, and they upgraded their running game, but they will only go as far (stop me when you’ve heard this before) as their quarterback will take them. And as long as their quarterback is Sam Bradford, they won’t reach the outer limits of their city. Expect them to finish smack dab in the middle of the league. But hey, who doesn’t want to spend their life in purgatory??

Key Additions: Latavius Murray, Dalvin Cook (Draft), Riley Reiff

Key Losses: Adrian Peterson, Matt Kalil, Chad Greenway 

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers. A staple in the NFL. They show up, they win games, they go home. It sounds simple, but it’s not. Aaron Rodgers just makes it look easy. Aaron Rodgers’ teams haven’t been blessed with top-5 defenses or running games, but he goes to the playoffs every year (they haven’t missed the playoffs since 2008). That is quite a feat in the NFL. And this season, after losing talent from his defense and offensive line, Rodgers will prove, yet again, why he should be the highest paid player in the NFL. Expect a deep run in the playoffs this year.

Key Additions: Martellus Bennett, Jahri Evans, Davon House

Key Losses: Eddie Lacy, Julius Peppers, T.J. Lang 

 

This Season’s Predictions:

Green Bay Packers: 11-5

Minnesota Vikings: 7-9

Detroit Lions: 6-10

Chicago Bears: 3-13

Anyone disagree with my predictions?? If you do, you may want to have that looked at….
