“Gotta Love That Irony.” (DaveTalksSports Podcast – Ep. #22)

Irony is everywhere.

The NFL needs/doesn’t need us….so Tyreek Hill plays.

ESPN has/doesn’t have a ‘No Politics Policy’….so Dan Le Batard has a job.

Aaron Boone was heard/not heard….so MLB suspended him.

And Matt Harvey, well, there’s no irony here, Matt Harvey just sucks at baseball….so he’s out of a job.

New York Yankees’ Manager, Aaron Boone, gave us the most polite, profanity-laced, rant in the history of sports.

The New York Mets still SUCK!!

Bryce Harper is not the best baseball player in the world. But, he’s still better than you think.
Jake Marisnick may be the most mature person in the world.
Jadeveon Clowney deserves more of your money..trust me.
If you think the Warriors should trade D’Angelo Russell before he ever plays a game for them, you’re a moron.

BREAKING NEWS: The Cleveland Browns Won A Football Game!!!!

A lot has happened in the last 635 days.

No, I won’t make a list, just take my word for it….

It’s hard to fathom being as bad as the Cleveland Browns. But, despite walking around with that rancid, putrid, rotten taste of losing they can’t seem to wash out of their mouths, they won a football game Thursday night. A football game — in real life.

no way

When NFL teams look at their schedule for an upcoming season, they “circle” winnable games. Every team should circle every game by the way, but hey, what do I know?! Thursday night, the Jets circled the Browns, and the Browns circled the Jets. That’s what you get when two “bottom-third” teams play each other. While neither team is running to buy plane tickets to Super Bowl LIII, it made for an exciting game.

What started as a defensive struggle, ended with a 4th quarter comeback. Yes, Baker Mayfield, the #1 pick in the 2018 draft, entered the game and brought Cleveland their 1st taste of victory since December 24th, 2016.

baker-mayfield-browns-210918

Was Mayfield impressive?? Absolutely. Should Browns’ fans rejoice?? Of course. Hell, I’d be dancing up and down the streets if I were them. BUT, this doesn’t mean Baker Mayfield is the next coming of John Elway. It doesn’t mean selecting Mayfield over Darnold was the right decision. And it doesn’t mean he will have a good career. It’s simply a really good performance in his 1st action in the NFL.

Don’t forget he was playing the Jets….

Ah yes, my Jets. The same way I’m not going to overreact to Mayfield’s efficient performance, I’m not going to overreact to Darnold’s perceived struggles. They’re undoubtedly talented, but they’re rookies. Now is the time to find the positives in Darnold’s performances. Now is the time to open your eyes and see that the Jets’ offensive line is terrible. Now is the time to recognize that Todd Bowles is the worst head coach in the NFL.

Darnold is scrambling for his life (showing off his spectacular footwork — a.k.a. his survival skills). Robby Anderson has no clue how to hold on to a football. Terrelle Pryor Sr. has forgotten everything there is to know about football. And, did I mention Todd Bowles is the worst head coach in the NFL????

raw

While the Jets lost 21-17 (the exact score I predicted hours before kickoff) to the Browns, wins and losses aren’t a concern.

SAM DARNOLD’S PROGRESS IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS!!!!

Envision 2020. Close your eyes if necessary. Picture Tom Brady’s retirement ceremony. The AFC East is up for grabs. And Sam Darnold, paired with a good offensive line, wide receivers who can catch, and a defensive line that gets pressure on opposing quarterbacks, stand atop their division.

Now that….is a world I can get used to living in.

What do you think of Sam Darnold?? Baker Mayfield?? Post your instantaneous reactions in the comment section below.

We’ve Got NFL On The Brain

From the 2nd round to a 2nd job….

Such are the travails of Christian Hackenberg.

hackenberg

After being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, Hackenberg never saw the field. Literally, he wasn’t ALLOWED to look at the field. And then, the improbable happened. He was traded to the Oakland Raiders for a 2019 conditional draft pick. The condition being he remained on the Raiders’ roster for a certain amount of time.

I can’t imagine three weeks was long enough….

It wasn’t. The Jets won’t receive draft compensation for Hackenberg. They’ll receive nothing — and like it. As for Hackenberg, he’s home, beefing up his resume. Good luck my friend.

As for someone who actually knows how to throw a football, Andrew Luck is BACK!! He attended Minicamp for the Indianapolis Colts Tuesday. Everyone watched in amazement, as he threw a football….FIVE YARDS.

Luck is recovering from a January 2017 shoulder surgery. He missed all of last year due to setbacks in the rehabilitation process. Luck promised fans he would be on the field for Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season.

I CAN’T WAIT FOR FOOTBALL TO START!!

This, my friends, was just a sampler of NFL news and notes. Stay tuned with DaveTalksSports.com for in depth NFL coverage leading up to and during the season.

This Is T.O. Being T.O.

This is T.O. being T.O.

After finally being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, 3rd time’s the charm, Terrell Owens has decided not to attend his induction ceremony. The Class of 2018’s ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 4th in Canton, OH. Last week, T.O. explained himself; sort of:

“After visiting Canton earlier this year, I came to the realization that I wish to celebrate what will be one of the most memorable days of my life, elsewhere,” Owens said. “At a later date, I will announce where and when I will celebrate my induction.”

In other words, T.O. wants to give the Hall of Fame Committee the middle finger for making him wait three years for his gold jacket.

This is typical. It’s not surprising. And completely predictable. This is T.O. being T.O.

I have to be honest (as always). I’m taking T.O.’s side on this one. T.O. has spent the past 20+ years showing his true colors. He’s an ego maniac, who craves the spotlight and attention at ALL TIMES. So those who are playing the shock and awe card, are naïve.

Whether it was commandeering the Dallas star….

dallas star

Showing off his pom-pom skills….

pom pom

Or just trying to enjoy some popcorn….

popcorn

This is T.O. being T.O.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Committee is made up of 48 voters, primarily media members. Once the list of Hall of Fame nominees is narrowed to 18 finalists, each must receive at least 80% of the vote to be enshrined into the Hall of Fame. Over the past two years, more than 20% of the Committee didn’t vote for T.O., leaving him on the outside looking in. We can talk about other players being snubbed by the Hall of Fame, or having to wait multiple years before induction, but T.O. having to wait three years is the SNUB OF ALL SNUBS!!

T.O. is 2nd all-time in receiving yards (15,934), 3rd all-time in receiving TDs (153), and 8th all-time in receptions (1,078).

To make T.O. wait five minutes to get in would have been bad enough, let alone three years.

to crying

Members of the Hall of Fame Committee, and T.O. haters worldwide want to cite his destructive attitude in the locker room as justification for snubbing T.O. That, is ridiculous!! T.O. may be a self-aggrandizing, narcissistic, *****, but he’s not a criminal. He’s not laundering money, or kidnapping your kid. He’s simply in love with his own reflection.

So for Gary Myers, Hall of Fame Committee Member, to publicly say this, “I wouldn’t have voted for Terrell Owens if I knew he wasn’t going to show up”, is ludicrous. His vote should be revoked. Whether T.O. shows up to his own induction ceremony, has ZERO BEARING on his worthiness of the Hall of Fame.

If the Pro Football Hall of Fame wants to portray an upstanding image, they MUST revoke Gary Myers’ vote, immediately.

That is all. Goodbye.

How do you feel about T.O.?? Tell me how you really feel in the comment section below.

“I quit!!”

“You can’t quit….you’re fired!!”

Wait, what?! Last time I checked, you can’t fire someone who’s already quit.

Can You Disinvite Someone Who’s Already RSVP’d NO????

The Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LII. Traditionally, championship teams, in major sports, are invited to the White House to celebrate their victory. Reportedly, only ONE Eagles’ player (Nick Foles) had confirmed he would attend Tuesday’s celebration. When the White House caught wind of this, the Eagles’ invitation was revoked.

not invited

Sounds mature.

This issue stems from handfuls of NFL players choosing to kneel on the field during the National Anthem. A good portion of Eagles’ players were known to participate in this form of protest. The White House issued a statement Monday evening:

“The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow. They disagree with their president because he insists that they proudly stand for the national anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.”

The Mayor of Philadelphia, Jim Kenney, posted a scathing response:

“Disinviting the Eagles from the White House only proves that our president is not a true patriot, but a fragile egomaniac obsessed with crowd size and afraid of the embarrassment of throwing a party to which no one wants to attend.”

“City Hall is always open for a celebration,” he added.

SPORTS and POLITICS have just taken part in a head-on collision.

The question is: Does anyone want that??

Yankee Power Play

The New York Yankees flexed their muscles this week.

costanza

This past Friday, ESPN announced they would move the Yankees-Blue Jays game on Sunday, July 8th from 1:00 P.M. EST to 8:00 P.M. EST (Sunday Night Baseball). This decision came just one day after the Yankees agreed to make-up a postponed game with the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, July 9th (as part of a double-header). This meant ESPN would have been asking the Yankees to play three games, in two different cities (and countries), in approximately 24 hours. These three games are also games three, four, and five of an 11-game road trip for the Yankees. I’m just sayin’….

I know the Yankees move the needle no matter who, and where they play, but this seemed like overkill. So, after the Yankees’ organization threatened to boycott interviews with ESPN for the REST OF THE SEASON, MLB acquiesced, moving the Yankees’ July 8th game back to 1:00 P.M. EST. Instead, Sunday Night Baseball will broadcast the Los Angeles Angels vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“We’re thankful to Commissioner Manfred for coming up with a common sense solution,” Yankees President Randy Levine said.

Common sense. What’s that?!
